Acute mania - Trial II

In this 6-week trial, the safety and effectiveness of the investigational drug will be compared with lithium and an inactive drug called a placebo. The placebo will be identical in appearance to the active tablets, and treatment will be assigned randomly so that neither the doctor nor the individual will know what treatment is being taken. Hospitalisation will be required for at least the first week of the study, and the severity of manic symptoms will be assessed at regular intervals by the doctor. If necessary, the doctor may prescribe other medication in addition to the study drug to control symptoms. Two hundred and forty patients are needed for this trial.

This study will be conducted at approximately 40 sites worldwide. Further details about investigational sites participating will be added as soon as possible.
