THE MEYERS PARAPLEGIC FUND

For the past 28 years, Mr. Meyers has been struggling with paralysis caused in a tragic fall. In the beginning there was hope of possible recovery, but over the years of therapy, surgeries, and rehabilitation, this has become a non-existant dream.

While Mr. Meyers does receive a check every month from Social Security (less than $750.00 per month), his expenses incurred for recent hospital stays, expenses for travel to hospitals in excess of 500 miles, hotels, meals, etc., have not been completely covered. While Medicare does cover some precedures and treatments, there are many it does not. Some of those not covered by Medicare include: wheelchairs and maintenance, special 'pads' for wheelchairs, modifications of the home, such as bathrooms, kitchens, doorway extensions, and rampways for entry into the home.

We have found that people with lesser afflictions, or none at all, seem to far much better with our government agencies than those with extreme disabilities, such as Mr. Meyers. After treading the sidewalks, calling numorous agencies and organizations, it seems there isn't much assistance available to accomodate people in Mr. Meyers situation. Since Mr. Meyers is not a celebrity and is just a member of the private sector, avenues for him in funding are practically non-existant.

While Mr. Meyers is married, his wife has had difficulties of her own and was unable to work on a continual basis during the past 3 years. Her part-time income is well under the amount needed for the above-mentioned expenses, therefore, putting more strain on their situation, and further mentioning, her being unable to accompany her husband for most of his doctor and hospital appointments.

What Mr. Meyers is hoping, is if there is anyone who might be willing to assist him through a financial donation, so that he might be able to obtain the equipment he needs and pay for expenses he has accumulated over the past 3 years. Recently he underwent surgery for amputation of the left leg, so a prosthesis is necessary for maintaining balance and tranfers from chairs, beds, vehicles, etc., which will be more added expense and only partially covered by Medicare.

Modifications were made in his home 3 years ago, but loans had to be obtained which are still not paid. Numerous expenses have yet to be met and hospital bills from almost 3 years ago have not yet been satisified, not to mention the recent hospital expenses.

Any amount anyone could possibly donate would be greatly appreciated and not abused.
