EDWARDS SYNDROME BY OUR GROUP
Edwards Syndrome, the primary cause is an extra cell or zygote on the 18th chromosome. This extra cell can come from the egg that the mother produces or through the sperm of the father. This extra cell causes and affects every stage of the baby's development and future growth. This also includes the development of the placenta and the umbilical cord.
Associated Causes
Alcohol abuse prior to conception,
Drug use prior to conception,
Recently discovered but not scientifically proven is the introduction of toxic fumes/materials either through the skin or through the respiratory system.
Prevention
There is no known perfect prevention for this defect,
Stated information states that if either parent uses drugs that conception should not be attempted until the system has been clean for more than one year.
If the mother is addicted to alcohol she should be sober for a minimum of one year prior to conception to minimize the chances of chromosome defects as alcohol can cause or be a partial cause to this defect.
Cures
At this time there is no known cures for this defect because the genetic make-up is made during the first trimester. The only scientific means to ensure that this does not happen or accur is cloning. However, there is still a possibility that this defect could occur. However, the probability is so slim that it is not measurable.
Although there is no known cures there has been many advances in the medical field that allows doctors to repair many of the defects associated with this syndrome. Such things as repairing defects of the heart and respitory system and muscle reconstruction. These are things that can be done to improve the baby's quality of life.
