Lesson No. 6- Communion
The body and blood of Christ.
What is communion?
Communion is when we believers gather together in the unity of Christ, and remember the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf on the cross.
When we partake of communion, we as Christians are identifying ourselves with the body and the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Through his beaten body we acknowledge our right to walk in divine health, for by his stripes we are healed. 1 Peter 2: 24.
Through his shed blood we acknowledge the forgiveness of our sin, thus giving us free access to God the Father.
1 Corinthians. 10: 16 - 17 says" The cup of blessing which we bless is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread and body for we are partakers of that one bread."
The body of Christ in communion.
Through communion we identify with the body of Christ, which was beaten and broken for us. 1 (Corinthians 11: 24).
Jesus endured 39 stripes of the lash for us. These represent the 39 major categories of diseases. Jesus himself bore our diseases, and carried our pains and by he stripes we were healed Isaiah 53: 4 - 5.
The blood of Christ in communion.
The most powerful weapon a Christian has in his armour is the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. The devil hates it because it is the blood that defeated him at Calgary. It is the blood that sets every born again believer free. It is the blood that has washed us and made us whiter than snow.
Revelations 12: 11
And they overcame him (satan) by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony.
John 6: 45 - 58 It is written in the prophets,
And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
48 I am that bread of life.
49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
Ephesians 1: 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians 2: 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
Colossions 1: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Colossions 1: 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Hebrews 9: 12 -14 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Hebrews 10: 19 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
1 Peter 1: 19
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.Does the bread and wine change into the body and blood of Jesus?
No it does not.
The bread and wine are just symbols representing the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
This can be seen in Jesus’ introduction of Communion at the Last supper.
Luke 22: 14 - 20
1 Corinthian 11: 23-34
Notice that Jesus did not take a knife and share his actual body and blood with His disciples, but rather introduce the ancient symbol of the passover feast as representing His body and blood. In doing so He made a very clear statement that he was the passover lamb that would be slain, so the death angel would pass over those under the protection of His blood.
When should every born again believer take communion?
Jesus gave us instructions to do this in memory of him. Whenever believers come together as a body, it is good to take communion in obedience to God's word, and also because there is great power for healing and seeing one's needs met. It is done in remembrance of what Jesus did on the cross.
Communion is not for unbelievers.
God’s Word is very specific about receiving communion in an unworthy manner.
1 Corinthian 11: 27 says, Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
verse 20 But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
Verse 29 For he that eats and drinks unworthily (not born again, or living in known sin,) eats and drinks damnation unto himself, not discerning the Lord’s Body.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep or have died.
verse 31 For if we would judge ourselves we should not be judged.
. Verse 32 But when we are charged we are chastened of the Lord that we should not be condemned with the world.33 wherefore my brethren when you come together to eat, wait one for another
34 and if any man hunger let him eat at home that you come not together unto judgment.
