Water Baptism

The Greek word for baptism is "Baptizo" which means to dip or to immerse. It is only mentioned in the New Testament. From this we can see that Baptism involves being fully immersed and not just sprinkled with water.
Water baptism as obedience
Being baptised in water is an act of obedience for every believer. The Bible teaches water baptism both by example and by direct command.
(A) luke 3: 21
Jesus himself was baptised in water.

( b) Acts 2: 38 - Matthew 28: 19 - 20 a.
Jesus and the Apostles commanded a water baptism.

WATER BAPTISM AS A SYMBOL

WHEN we were born again, we identified with Jesus's death, and consequently made the decision to die to self and live for God.
2 Corinthian 5: 15
When we enter the water of baptism we symbolise our dying to self (old lifestyle and attitudes etc.) and our being buried in the grave with Christ. When we come out of the water we are symbolizing our rising with Christ in new oneness of life. Roman 6: 4

WATER BAPTISM AS AN OUTWARD WITNESS
Water baptism should also be a clear outward witness to the world that you have died to self-and are now living for God, so it should take place publicly with witnesses to the fact.

THE PURPOSE OF WATER BAPTISM
Rom 6: 1 - 4 It becomes clear that God does not intend for His children to continue in sin. Water baptism enables the believer to dramatically see himself separated from his old nature, which according to scripture was dead in sin, and rising again to walk in newness of life. According to this passage of scripture, there are three steps in this transformation from a life dominated by sin to a life of righteousness before God.
Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
(1) Know that your old man has been crucified with Christ and buried in water baptism.

(2) Reckon (or count on the fact) that because it has been buried, your flesh will never rule over you, unless you let it. You do not have to sin. Romans 6: 11

(3) Yield or give yourself (body - mind - soul), not to sin and unrighteousness, but to God.
Rom. 6: 13
