THE NONI STORY
Thousands of years ago, ancient sea-going people travelled across the oceans in great outrigger canoes to settle the islands of French Polynesia. They brought with them a number of cherished plants to establish their new villages. Queen among these was Morinda citrifolia, or noni, whose fruit was prized for its healthful properties. These first settlers planted and cultivated noni throughout the islands, where it has continued to grow and reproduce for centuries.
Traditionally, all parts of the noni plant were used to treat a wide variety of ailments. The leaves, flowers, and even the bark were used to treat the eyes, skin wounds, abscesses, and contusions. The leaves were often heated and applied to the stomach or chest to relieve coughs, colds, and nausea. The young unripe fruit was mashed, mixed with salt, and placed over cuts or broken bones. Juice was extracted from the ripened noni fruit and was used to treat sicknesses such as arthritis, diabetes, muscle and joint pain, venereal diseases, and cancer.
The story of noni has been shared all over the world and noni is known by many people, yet called by a variety of different names. In Malaysia it is called mengkudu; in the Pacific Islands it is noni, in southeast Asia it is known as nhau; and in Hawaii it is often called nono or nonu.
Noni is a small tree found most commonly in tropical climates, and grows between 5 and 9 meters tall. The tree is enclosed with large green leaves and blooms several times a year with white flowers. Noni first buds out from the flowers as a small green fruit with bumpy nodules covering the skin. the fruit quickly ripens into a light yellow or shade of white and once ripened, falls from the tree. As the fruit ripens, it engorges with j uice that has a distinct odor and an offensive taste. Noni trees only take about three months to reproduce an entirely new crop, and amazingly, the trees produce year round. Doctors, scientiests, and universities across the globe are working to confirm what history and tradition have been claiming for thousands of years. Their latest research provides some insights into the effectiveness of noni in treating a variety of ailments and diseases.
While the research is making remarkable progress, the results are still in their infancy. However, the personal experiences of hundred of thousands of people who have experienced the healing properties of the noni fruit are even far more compelling than the ongoing research. The recent commercialization of noni fruit in the Western world has led to its widespread distribution and acceptance. Today, noni ranks among the world's best-selling herbal/botanical remedies for a wide variety of ailments.
