What is Business Excellence?
Without going into jargons, it is the total approach of a business that ensures its short term and long term success.
Several models are available world wide for the companies to follow. Most of them are either outright copies or are partly influenced by two of the most popular awards in the world. One of them is the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from the US and another is European Foundation Quality Award Model (EFQM. Several Awards are in vogue in various countries. India has its national quality award in the form of Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award, instituted by Govt. of India and executed by a National committee supported by its national standards body, Bureau of Indian Standard. Another reputed award in India is CII-Exim Bank award for Business Excellence, which is modeled on the basis of EFQM Model. Still another award is Ramakrishna Bajaj Award, which is fashioned on the lines of Malcolm Baldrige Award.
Well known awards from Japan include Deming Prize and the awards for TPM excellence.
While some of the awards are focused more on shopfloor practices, the business excellence awards focus on overall performance of the business including its apporaches and the results achieved satisfying all the stake holders. Customers and Shareholders are not the only stakeholders. The range includes your neighboring society to the vendors, and the society affected by your products as well. Not only this, an organisation must demonstrate its ethical practices and its role as a responsible corporate citizens.
