Volcanoes and Earthquakes on the ocean bed cause tsunami's. Tsunamies may strike without warning, often on a calm days. The earthquake which is unleased is caused from a far away distance so the shock waves would not be felt on land. It reaches it's highest hight when it reaches land. The waves get the closer togeter when it reaches the shore too. The tsunami pounds down on the coast tearing up anything in it's way. The largest recorded tsunami was 280 ft. high. It surged past the Japanesse island's of Ishigaki in 1971. When an earthquake below the oceans's floor, part of the sea bed is forced upward. The seismic waves make the sea floor jolt, which creates huge sea waves. In Japan they have dikes to protect there town, but still alot of water get through to the city. After the tsunamie the whole city is filled with water. In Japan they put out machines (more than 100 miles out) To sensier the Bed of the sea so everyone in Japan has a week to get up into the mountains (Higher ground). If I lived in Japan I would move my hous up in the mountains, Because when a Tsunamie comes through you will have to build your house all over again. It might be okay if it happened every two years but, Tsunamies happen mre then two times a year some times. I mean sometimes there is not a Tsunamie for more than one or two years.
