It had been recognised only by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and U.A.E. but now, even the latter has withdrawn its recognition. The U.N. has condemned it for publically flogging hundreds of women who violated their strict dress code, burying people alive because of their "sin", amputating hands and feet as a punishment for crime and stoning to death others, which has embarrassed the more moderate Islamic nations. One woman had a finger amputated simply because she used nail polish !

FORMING FRIENDSHIPS!
"Let's roll" is a phrase borrowed from Todd Beamer, an airline passenger who rushed terrorists to prevent them from murdering more people. The President's speech began by bolstering our resolve to defend our land from terrorism and proceeded to
encourage us to extend ourselves in friendship and compassion to our neighbors, our larger communities and to Muslims in distant lands. He concluded with the words, "Let's roll."
President Bush commended Jewish and Christian Americans who have "reached out to their Muslim neighbors." He asked school children to write "pen-pal" letters of friendship to Muslim children far away.
THERE IS JUST ONE PROBLEM : THE QUR'AN !
The notion of Muslims allowing friendships to form with non-Muslims is a hard sell for many followers of the Qur'an. Setting aside the more terrorizing texts in the Qur'an calling Muslims to slaughter infidels, I simply wish to share (below) those that
forbid friendship with unbelievers. Unfortunately, these texts tend to put our efforts to form friendships with Muslims on a one-way street.
"Let believers not make friends with infidels, rather than believers. He that does this has nothing to hope for from Allah." The Imrans; Sura 3:29.
"Believers, do not make friends with any men other than your own people." The Imrans; Sura 3:118.
"Take not to yourselves friends of them [those whom "Allah has led astray"], until they emigrate in the way of God; then if they turn away, seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take no friend nor helper from among them" Women; Sura 4:89.
"Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for friends. They are friends with one another. Whoever of you seeks their friendship shall become one of their number." The Table; Sura 5:51.
"Your only friends are Allah, His apostle, and the faithful: those who attend to their prayers, pay their alms-tax, and kneel down in worship." The Table; Sura 5:55.
"Believers, do not seek the friendship of the infidels and those who were given the Book before you, who have made of your religion a jest and a pastime." The Table; Sura 5:57 [Those given the Book are Jews and Christians].
"You see many of them making friends with unbelievers... Had they believed in Allah and the Prophet and that which is revealed to him they would not have befriended them." The Table; Sura 5:81.
"Believers, do not befriend your fathers or your brothers if they choose unbelief in preference to faith." Mary; Sura 19:23.
There are texts elsewhere in the Qur'an that may, by implication, mitigate this message but certainly not with equal force. Similar passages in the Bible are, in my view, less personally focused and more forcefully balanced by other clear passages that honor the alien and call for kind and friendly
outreach to all peoples of all nations.
The larger contexts of the passages from the Qur'an above do not change their clear meaning. Fortunately, not all Muslims of the past or present have swallowed this hard line. Thank God for
peaceful moderates in Islam. We are relieved when we find exceptions in real life to the teachings above.
Yet, these texts explain why peaceful co-existence is so difficult to attain in lands where Muslims and non-Muslims co-exist (like Israel, Sudan, Somalia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia, India, Bosnia, Kosovo and many others). The official
charter of the Palestinian Authority, for example, still states that the elimination of the Jewish State is their primary aim. Peace negotiations are fruitless when one side (the Palestinians) totally refuses to consider co-existence as an option and the other side (Israel) considers co-existence only
on strict terms largely of their own making. Both sides (especially at the leadership level) have done too much to break trust and too little to rebuild it.
Regardless of the past, any solution now in Israel and Palestine that does not tolerate reasonable co-existence is simply a call for more injustice and bloodshed. Many countries the world over have come to terms with co-existence among various peoples
and faiths. I sadly suspect that one reason too few Islamic countries have managed to do this is found in the book they read.
In his November 8 speech, President Bush referred to a four-year-old girl who couldn't grasp why some people could hate a whole nation of other people they
don't even know. So she asked, "Why don't we just tell them our names?"
Now that is what I call innocence.
I am all for growing up and being realistic. However, beware of books and ideas that unduly undermine the sort of innocence held by a child who believes in the possibility of friendship (warning: this includes a lot of popular books and ideas in the world today).
Ideas have consequences and we have grieved deeply over the effects of bad ideas. Innocence also has consequences and at the top of the list are friendships well warmed with love. Just look at children of different races, mind-sets and classes as they play together.
So, let's take our President's challenge. There are seven million Muslims in the United States alone. Even if a friendship can only begin on a one-way street, go tell a Muslim your name. And if the name of Jesus Christ is even more precious to you than your own (and a door gracefully opens), share his name as well.
