Non-fiction information summary of book:
This non-fiction police thriller, covers the true story of the youngest police officer in the State of California during the turbulent, post-war 70’s. The book begins when teenage officer, Dale Duke, at the tender age of 16 became a police cadet and follows his career for the next six years through two different police agencies. While most young boys and girls are concerned with acne, dating and passing their next test, Dale was dodging bullets, going into bars to breakup “fist fights” and chasing murder suspects at over 100 miles per hour. The book follows Dale’s career from Wasco PD, a small town police department in Central California, a largely rural community to the metropolitan city of Bakersfield with a growing population of over 200,000 people.
Dale witnesses and talks about the all too common condition found in police ranks, such as excessive alcohol consumption, affairs and sometimes reckless behavior of his fellow “old timers”. At the same time however, Dale shows in clear, interesting detail, the heroism that is shown by the common officer time after time. You’ll be there during shoot outs in the dark, exciting patrol in the police helicopter, high speed chases and the death of a policeman. You can even experience the “bar fight” involving a professional football player in which a split second decision had to be made, either kill the suspect who was hurting Dale's partner or attempt the “choke hold” and hope Dale was not also killed.
In the end, this book is about people. For the most part, people like you and your neighbors, with one exception. These fine men and women are ready to die, if necessary, to save a stranger, a drunk or any other person in need of help.
WHY IS THIS BOOK DIFFERENT?
To my knowledge, there has never been a book written through the eyes of a teenager, who was faced for the first time with the “true life” trials faced by much older policeman. Dale’s perspective is unique as it was written from experiences incurred as a teenage policeman, with the filter and benefit of adult living experience 25 years later. All of the stories are true, unabridged and chilling.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Anyone who enjoys true life, action adventure stories. This book should appeal to anyone who is interested in police work, has a friend, spouse or relative who is in law enforcement. But beyond that, the book crosses the boundary of just another “cop book” to one that truly speaks to the human condition, the innocence of the young, the rationalization of the old and the classic battle of good vs. evil.
AUTHOR BIO:
The author was born in Bakersfield California in the mid-fifties, grew up working in the fields around Bakersfield, picking cotton at five years old, laying irrigation pipe, driving tractors and working in potato sheds. Dale was raised in a Christian home which helped him overcome some of the temptations faced by many policeman. While attending the local high school and attending Bakersfield College, Dale paid his way through school working as an emergency medical technician and police officer. Dale even had a stint at a local mortuary moving bodies and preparing for burial. Dale currently lives with his wife, Raylene and children, Jessica and Clayton, in Bakersfield. In Dale’s spare time over the years, he has enjoyed flying airplanes, riding motorcycles and skiing with his family.
MOST IMPORTANT THING:
The author is attempting to convey to the audience that police work is exciting, fun, dangerous, hard on the family, grueling and one of the most full-filling careers one can undertake. One must be careful however as the world is not black and white, but many shades of grey.
