This & That
This is a new web site of indian tidbits that will develop along as we get the response. It promises to be a chatty and fun site that would be interesting to read. The effort would also be to include information or prospects for readers. We thought this would be interesting for Indians abroad so that they can keep abreast with indian sports and indian news in a chatty way. That is, this & that!
Just you wait.
Meanwhile, all you Indian sports enthusiasts, you could be quite happy at the fact that the Indian Flag supposedly flew high in Australia as well as in the sphere of golf. First things first.
When it comes to indian sports, we have certainly improved. But, we tend to wilt, we are talented, but not durable. The indians abroad will understand what I mean. We are flash-in-the-pans. For a variety of reasons. One, there is no sustained and methodical approach even by the individual sportsman barring some like Tendulkar - we as well as the people and media get carried away. We are up there and down there in a flash. My rating of a sportsman is not merely by the talent but by the sustained performance which comes by temperament, intelligence and the fire without being cocky.
We did extremely well because of our talent, but when the Australians regrouped, because they don't wilt, we repeated the same mistakes and were unable to regroup. I would rate the Australian cricket team a less talented team that was better.
Will India ever win, will India ever be at the top of International sports? Nah, not in the foreseeable future. Sorry. That's not a nice indian tidbit.
Yes, if politics and the art of sinking politics to new depths were an Olympic event, we would win the gold hands down - greasy hands down.
It was indeed heart-warming to hear Amitabh Bachhan the other day saying something that has been close to my heart. To a question by Shekhar Gupta, Editor Indian Express, he said the only organisation he truly admired was the National Defence Academy, the nursery for grooming cadets into officers for the Indian Army. He even suggested a conscription of at least 6 months for all Indian citizens. I do think that would be a real help in building discipline and character, something we do lack as a people. Think about that for now. If you have any ideas, do get in touch.
But there is a little of 'India Shining' in indian sports that would make a good indian tidbit. An Indian golfer, Arjun Atwal, has made it to the ultimate Golf Tour, the US PGA Tour. Here is an example that Indian sports must emulate, because you do not reach US PGA without sustained performance, no flash-in-the-pans here. If you know him, you will also know he is a good sport, a good human being, who is compassionate but intensely passionate in a quiet sort of way, the type who will be quietly gritting his teeth, but will not be deliriously pumping his fists. Keep it up, Arjun, take indian sports also up.
Parting Shot: Is it not encouraging for indians world over that in a country, though strong in democracry to a point of self-serving politicians taking advantage of it, you had someone (Sonia Gandhi) renounce the post of Prime Minister when it was hers for the taking. That means we have an apolitical scientist wizard as the President and an apolitical economist wizard (Manmohan Singh appointed by Sonia). I find this a reason to cheer. A good indian tidbit.
