Related Experience
ADJUNCT FACULTY POSITION
2004 - 2004 Walsh University. Design and teach a course in Botany including lecture and lab components for a junior-senior level elective.
GRADUATE ASSISTANT
2003 - Present University of Akron. As a graduate assistant, I taught general biology to approximately 120 students per semester. My current research has focuses on the evolution of E. coli utilizing long term evolutionary lineages. I have acquired additional experience in plasmid preparations, construction of competent cell lines, creation of genetic markers, as well as a variety of staining and other diagnostic techniques. Working with the construction of a molecular phylogeny of hornworts, I also have experience using PCR, DNA cloning, DNA sequencing and clean-up reaction, and gel electrophoresis. During this time, I have supervised several undergraduates.
GRADUATE MENTOR
University of Akron. As a participant of the Muehlstein Academy for Math and Science, I was responsible for leading a team of high school teachers, undergraduates, and high school teachers in summer research projects. For the 2003 year my team focused on several projects including creation of a molecular phylogeny for E.coli, using growth curves to explore resource utilization in E. coli, and correlating oxygenation levels in zebra fish to aggression. In the 2004 year my team focused on water quality of steams in nearby Bath Nature preserve correlated to levels of hydromodification and disturbance. We also correlated numerous types of qualitative and quantitative data correlated with observed disturbance areas to indicate which data type was the be biological indicator of disturbance.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
1999 - 2002 University of Akron. My research interest first involved the role of leptin in fat metabolism, concentrating on leptin activity in fish tissue. Working with sunfish I performed numerous enzyme assays on liver to look at level of leptin. I then went on to work with Escherichia coli. I helped set up the lab where I was to work as a graduate assistant. Here I learned many microbiological and molecular techniques such as performing bacterial competitions, performing and reading bacterial growth curves, PCR reactions, media preparation, and sterile lab techniques. I also successfully utilized a variety of electron microscopy techniques to obtain several images of my bacterial lineages. I was also responsible for bacterial stock maintenance and liquid nitrogen storage.
