Period Paralysis describes many disorders, most of which come under the category of neuromuscular diseases. Muscular Dystrophy is the "family", if you will, that encompasses at least 50 different forms and severities, many with their own names.

There is Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis, a rare but nasty one which fortunately can be managed with the right doctor and the right motivation to modify one's lifestyle somewhat on the part of the patient. It's a scary disease as this webmaster can attest to. Imagine the horror of waking one morning to find oneself virtually paralyzed from the neck down. However, imagine my elation when through the efforts of teams of dedicated physicians, I was pacing the floors of the hospital ward days later ;)

Visit our forum at The Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis Forum to read more.

The main organization that acts as a clearinghouse for information on HKPP as Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis is often shortened to is the Periodic Paralysis News Desk
- hkpp.org
which has information on various forms of periodic paralysis.

Then there are a couple of other organizations I'll mention here which act as information portals for OTHER neuromuscular disorders this webmaster is currently being diagnosed for. Don't feel bad for me, things could be a lot worse.

1) Hereditary Neuropathy With Liability to Pressure Palsies HNPP

2) Myasthenia Gravis

Of course, for those who need our help most:

There is also the best known organization, which has been faithfully chaired by Jerry Lewis for decades is The MDA or Muscular Dystrophy Association. Despite their exciting and selfless Telethon every Labor Day, they can always use your donations to help find a cure.

Jerry has been personally touched by the youngest victims of this disease, children, and devotes thousands of hours of his time to help. You know Jerry is NOT just looking for publicity.

So, patient, those who have a loved one with one of these disorders or those who suspect their own symptoms hint at one of these disorders may be interested in these sites.

Obviously, self-diagnosis is folly. Please see your physician when you notice any abnormal changes in your body that concern you!
