Hunstanton Cromer Road Bowls Club
In 1899 a small contingent of Gentlemen, interested in promoting the very new game of bowls to Norfolk, met in the Golden Lion Hotel and discussed the possibility of forming a club, and most important, finding a plot of land suitable for a bowls green. (The Recreation Ground Company was formed to manage the Recreation Ground for the Le Strange Estate.)
The club was offered the plot of ground that the club stands on today. The club decided it could not wait a couple of years, that is how long it would take to prepare a new bowls green ready to start bowling. The Hunstanton Cricket Club was approached to see if they would be kind enough to rent them the use of the wicket square to start playing bowls in early May 1900. By early June they had purchased 8 sets of woods, jacks and footers (mats), also dusters and aprons for the ball boys. Twenty founders of the club each paid a Crown to start the club and the first year's membership with the Annual Subscription to be half a crown.
In April 1900 they met again and formed a club to be known as HUNSTANTON BOWLING CLUB. A Captain, Treasurer and Committee were elected, the first President was not elected until 1904.The Hunstanton Recreation Ground Company was approached to see if it was possible to rent a piece of land in the corner of the Recreation Ground to be used as a bowling green.
In 1908, all was going well on the green and the members decided they required a Club House and purchased a timber building. This was the only type of building the Le Strange Estate would grant permission to be erected, this was purchased and errected for£13. 1. 8d. Two years later the committee asked the Secretary to put tenders to have the building painted. The lowest tender was 7 shillings and 6 pence for supplying the paint, rubbing down the old paintwork and re-painting. The committee considered this was too expensive and eventually accepted a tender for 6 shillings and 11 pence
