African American Women Discuss Depression
Hujambo African American Bibi?
Hujambo African American Bibi is Swahili for "How Are You African American Woman?" Sijambo, "I am well", is the polite Swahili response to hujambo. More and more each day African American women are asking this question concerning their mental health. The question is a legitimate concern for African American Women because depression affects women more than twice the rate of men. It has been well documented that depression is a malady that is on the rise in African American Females.
Because depression is not widely accepted in African American Families and Communities, many African American Woman suffer in silence. Depression is the number one cause of suicide and is second only to heart disease as the major cause of work absence. Because depression is a treatable condition no African American female should suffer the agony of depression.
