History of Las Olas
On October 1, 1915, Broward County was officially created out of Dade County and named for Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Florida's governor from 1905 to 1909, Until this time, the beach was accessible by boat only – and the beach was one of the major attractionsl One of the first items of business for the first County Commission was to build a bridge (actually three bridges) connecting Fort Lauderdale with the beach. The first road to the ocean was called Las Olas, Spanish for "the waves." The series of bridges opened in 1917 and as the major route of access to the beach, Las Olas was an important road from the start. As time went on, it became more than a thoroughfare, but a place for homes and for businesses. While other passages opened to the beach as years went by, Las Olas retained its position as one of the most important boulevards in South Florida. Not only will you find elegant neighborhood residences along the eastern part of the Boulevard, but Las OIas remains one of the premier shopping streets in America, often spoken of in the same breath as Rodeo Drive and Worth Avenue. From the '50s through the '70s, Las Olas lost some of its popularity to airconditipned shopping centers. But in the early 1990s, Las Olas regained its fame, people started coming back to find shops that were unique, different from those found at the rnalls. Today Las Olas is hot and it's getting hotter, It's the place to be. The European ambiance and the abundance ol "taste of the world" restaurants – close to two dozen on or near Las Olas – has brought new life to Las Olas Blvd.
