Wulingyuan--the World Natural Heritage
Located on the west part of Hunan Province, Wulingyuan is a natural landscape made up of sandstone, mountain peaks, forests and valleys with a primitive ecological system. Wulingyuan consists of three different scenic areas: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain and Suoxi Valley, which are well concentrated into one vast expanse of land covering an area of 369 square kilometers. With strang lofty peaks, seas of forest, clouds and mists winding around, Wulingyuan is known as "the labyrith of nature".
Wulingyuan is a green treasury and natural zoo. Over 97.7% of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is clad with a vast expanse of primitive sub-tropical forests. There are 191 species of forest trees of which many are rare including gingo, spruce etc. There are quite a few exotic flowers, too, such as the unique lobster flower, giant mountain lotus and all sorts of azalea, iron plum and orchid. Flowers are in blossom all the year around giving the area a beautiful fragrance.
According to a preliminary survay, hundreds of species of animals are found in Wulingyuan. Among them are rare animals such as rhesus, civet, giant salamander, pangolin and some 20 rare birds such as tragopan, golden pheasant, white-headed duck, red-billed leiothrix, etc.
Wulingyuan is a scenic area of exceptional and universal value and so in December 1992, the World Natural Heritage Committee of UNESCO inscribed the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area on the World Heritage List.
Wulingyuan is an area where many of China's national minorities live including the Tujia Nationality, the Miao Nationality and the Bai Nationality. They still kept their traditional customs and habits.
The city of Zhangjiajie(formerly Dayong) is a developing tourist city with a long history. It abounds with a great many relics and places of historic interest. The Puguang Temple--a temple of the combination of Chinese Bhuddism and Taoism, displays the combined architecture of China's Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. The grotto in the Yuhuang Cave has a history of nearly 200 years with a total of 19 stone-carved figures and more than 50 places with carvings displayed. The Mount Tianmen(the door to the heaven),with its rhomboid gate in the middle, is so magnificent that no any other can be its match. The 50 kms-long Maoyan River, has such fascinating sceneries along its banks that it can be comparable to the Three Gorges of the Yangtse River. Besides there are quite a few flood lands in the middle of the river with swiftly flowing water, to draft on it by a skin draft one can really experience an excitement which only adventurers enjoy. This place is also suitable for rock climbing. The entire area is covered with towering cliffs of sandstone of quartz and dense unspoiled jungle which conceals fantastic caves full of stalactites and stalagmites. It's a magical environment with an abundance of wildlife. It's a real unspoiled piece of paradise. The area offers quality climbing in a quiet relaxing sub-tropical atmosphere and should not be missed.

Highlights of China
Beijing (Peking)
Has been the political and cultural capital of China since the Ming dynasty of the 15th century. The Imperial Palace complex, known as the "Forbidden City" as foreigners and common people were denied entry, has a great store of treasures in its more than 9,000 rooms. Nearby is the Temple of Heaven, an architectural masterpiece. Tiananmen Square dominates the city center, covering 100 acres. A two hour drive away is the Great Wall of China, one of the true wonders of the world. Close by are the Ming Tombs, resting place of 13 ancient emperors.
Shanghai
Is a cosmopolitan city, famous for its fine arts and entertainment, as well as being an important commercial center. It was the base of many European trading companies during the 19th century, and their enclave of massive buildings along the Huangpu River became known as the Bund. Highlights here include the Yu Garden, Jade Buddha Temple, the Old City, bazaar, and of course a walk along the Bund.
Xi'an
Is the cradle of Chinese civilization, inhabited since 6,000 BC. It has become famous since the 1974 discovery of the Tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor to unify China in 221 BC. Here archaeologists have uncovered an astonishing army of thousands of life size terra-cotta soldiers and horses. Other points of interest include the Hua Quing Hot Springs, Wild Goose Pagoda and the Banpo Museum on the site of a Neolithic village.
Guilin
Has a remarkable topography of karst (limestone) peaks and spires that have become so immortalized in Chinese painting over the centuries that they look familiar to us today. Clustered along the Li River, they present a dramatic spectacle with each change of light. A cruise on the river will allow you to enjoy the picturesque peaks and surrounding countryside.
Guangzhou (Canton)
Is a vast commercial city on the banks of the Pearl River. Only three hours from Hong Kong, it serves as the major southern gateway to the South China Sea. This bustling city has many fine parks and gardens. Highlights include Dr. Sun Yat Sen's Mausoleum, Temple of the Banyan Trees and Yuexui Park. Accessible by air, train or hydrofoil, Guangzhou is a nice place to get a taste of China out of Hong Kong.
