Pheromone traps for pests of tea plantation
(1) GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Odors are primary mode of communication among insects. Through pheromone traps we are taking opportunity of this attribute of insects to minimize their damage in plantation. Pheromone trap consists of suitable trap frame/structure, specific odors and non-drying sticky coating to be coated onto trap structure. Principle of pheromone trap is to infatuate the target insects through specific odors and to attract them towards its source to finally get trapped onto sticky surface. We suggest the planters to fabricate the trap structures out of bamboo and plastic sheet on their own. We provide Helure B, Attractant Adjuvant and Non-drying Sticky Coating at competitive cost. Blend of Non-drying Sticky Coating & Attractant Adjuvant is painted onto trap frame and Helure B is attached to each trap. Method to fabricate the traps and use the above inputs is quite elaborate therefore we provide the detailed methodology separately to the planters upon request. Here we are emphasizing about our aggregation pheromone and the benefits that will accrue upon application of pheromone traps. Our Helure B and Attractant Adjuvant are aggregation pheromones specially developed for planters. Our Helure B and Attractant Adjuvant effectively infatuates adult moths of lepidoptera pests viz. Red slug, Looper, Caterpillars, etc., and adult male & female Tea Mosquito Bugs. We recommend using yellow color plastic sheet as trap. Yellow is versatile visual attractant and attracts many economic pests e.g. aphids, thrips, greenflies, whiteflies, parasitic wasps, fungus gnats, leafminers, etc. Empirical observations have not revealed significant catches of predators. As compared to sex pheromones (normally sold in the market) that infatuate only adult male target insects our pheromone solution has got wider applicability. We repeat our aggregation pheromone and yellow color infatuates and attracts wide range of economic pests with no serious threat to predators.
(2) MODE OF ACTION: Odors are a primary method of communication among insects, where the chemicals, emanated by either one or both sexes, serve to attract other individuals for feeding, mating, protection and to inhibit copulation between different species. It is due to certain volatile (one or more) associated with host plants that insects detect for feeding and/or egg laying. They form colonies on the basis of chemical signals emanated by the members. Sex emanation plays important role in signaling readiness to mate between sexually mature individuals and simultaneously to inhibit copulation between different species. Certain insects also produce alarm signals, again in form of odors, in response to any threat they perceive. Our Aggregation Pheromones - HELURE & ATTRACTANT ADJUVANT are based upon these behavioral traits. Their application misleads and attracts the Tea Mosquito Bugs & Lepidoptera moths to be caught onto the trap.
(3) USES: It is evident from the mode of action that function of HELURE and trap system is to decoy insects pests and subsequently either to detect their presence or decline their population level. Field applications have revealed significant catches of moths of Lepidopteran pests e.g. Looper, Red slug, Caterpillars, etc., and Tea Mosquito Bugs through our aggregation pheromone. Most flying insects but not predators are attracted towards yellow color. Hence we recommend using yellow color plastic sheets. Yellow color serves as visual attractant for many flying insect pests e.g. Thrip, Green flies, White flies, Aphids, Parasitic Wasps, Fungus Gnats, Leaf miners, etc. To repeat no serious threat to predators is associated with this visual attractant (i.e. predators are not attracted towards the yellow color). Hence our trapping system has wide applicability in your plantation. Our pheromone trapping system can be used for following pest management strategies:
(A) Mass trapping: This is the most astonishing feature of insect trap. Usage of adequate number of traps can prove to be effective to reduce the population level of Tea Mosquito Bugs, Lepidoptera Moths & other insect pests and their breed to an acceptable level. It is an excellent method of plant protection without polluting the environment and without any hazard to the quality of final produce.
(B) Mating disruption: It is the different way of using insect trap for plant protection. Usage of high and permanent concentration of HELURE can prevent the meeting between the individuals of opposite sex by masking the natural pheromone. Male insects are not able to locate their females, which remain not impregnated and cannot reproduce themselves.
(C) Monitoring: Usage of few insect traps can facilitate us to detect the presence of pests and its population density. No time consuming examination of plants is necessary and no expert knowledge is needed and adequate proceeding is possible on the basis of outcome. If you found no catches of pests, it is most likely that no damage from this pest has to be expected. As a consequence no treatment is necessary. This saves work and money.
(4) BENEFITS: Following benefits are associated with usage of insect trap-
(a) Work towards ultimate purpose with remarkable success i.e. significant decline in population level of Tea Mosquito Bugs, Lepidoptera Moths and other insects pests.
(b) Apart from mass trapping it is also designed for other pest management practices like monitoring and mating disruption.
(c) Application of trap structures for a month or two is not the end of the story. Trap structures once fabricated and deployed will continue to catch significant number of other insects for quite long period of time. Trap structure fabricated with wood/bamboo and plastic sheet is very long-lasting and will render you services for more than 2-3 years.
(d) Non-drying Sticky Coating painted onto plastic sheet won’t dry up early and will be effective for whole season unless saturated by insect caught and dust.
(e) Compatible with Bio Dynamic or Organic practices where holistic management practices are encouraged and no residues of external elements in final produce are allowed. It has nothing to do with tealeaves. Trap is suspended parallel to the bushes and effects only air with very minute amount of extra fragrance.
(f) Pose no serious threat to predators and other harmless insect.
(g) Facilitates development of pathogens/microbes. (Refer to question & answer 14 below for more info).
(h) You will be able to save your medical treatment cost of labour, because of minimized chances of getting affected by chemical poisons.
(i) It is very economical and easy to use.
(j) Overall, significant increase in your productivity/profitability.
(5) METHOD OF APPLICATION: Two kinds of HELURE are available- “Helure-A” and “Helure-B”. Helure-A is an alarm pheromone for Tea Mosquito Bugs. Helure-B is an aggregation pheromone for Tea Mosquito Bugs & Lepidoptera Moths. We suggest the planters to fabricate the trap structures on their own. We provide Non-drying Sticky Coating, Attractant Adjuvant and Helure at competitive costs. Please call us to explain the method to fabricate and deploy trap structure and to use our pheromone inputs.
(6) AVAILABILITY: Available packaging of Non-drying Sticky Coating is 25 liter, Attractant Adjuvant is 2.5 liter and of Helure is 1 liter.
(7) SHELF LIFE: It is strongly recommended to use HELURE within 10 to 15 days of receipt and not to store for long period. If you do need to store for a month or two then do it in refrigerator.
(8) RECOMMENDED RATE OF APPLICATION: We suggest deployment of 25 traps per hectare at the spacing of 20 meter in plain areas and 50 traps per hectare at the spacing of 10 meter in hilly areas.
(9) CONDITION OF WARRANTY: Buyer assumes all responsibility for safety and use not in accordance with direction. DAKSH INDUSTRIES limit of warranty extends only to replacement of defective product. In no case shall DAKSH INDUSTRIES or its dealer be liable for consequential, special, or direct damage resulting from the use and handling of this product.
