Richard Heck has been a member of the Indianapolis Computer Society (ICS) for almost 17 years and, in that time, has attended hundreds of meetings, giving up precious family time, to help the ICS grow. For example, in the past 15 years he has attended: ICS Board of Director's meetings, Internet Committee meetings, BBS committee meetings, INDY PC NEWS Magazine committee meetings, Publicity Committee meetings, Finance Committee meetings and all those “one-on-one, hand-holding, I'll-help-you-get-though-it” meetings, taking hundreds of phone calls, hundreds of faxes and answering thousands of e-mail/bbs messages. Richard loves helping people make better use of their computers.
Richard has accomplished much during his tenure with the ICS. When he joined the Indianapolis Computer Society, there was no "ICS Web Page," or any ICS presence on the internet at all. He was instrumental in helping create the current ICS web page that is still being used today. During his term as ICS President, he had to drag the entire ICS Board of Directors and most of the ICS members kicking and screaming all the way into the "internet age." During his term as President, the ICS Board felt it unnecessary to have a "ICS Web Page." Some of the board's comments were "who's going to see it?", "what good will it do us?", and "who is going to maintain it?" (which turned out to be Richard for the last four years!) "most of the ICS members don't even have modems, and if they do they don't have them hooked up or even know how to get on the internet," "what is a web page?", "where will the web page be?" and "what and where is cyberspace?" Richard looks back now and couldn't be more proud of how far he has helped the ICS come!
It is important to mention that when Richard was ICS President he contacted the ITEC - Indianapolis Indiana's largest Technology Expo, and was instrumental in getting the ICS involved. The ICS now is very much a part of ITEC.
When Bill Gates of Microsoft came to Indiana, Richard escorted him to several meetings and assisted in handling the local Media/Press with him.
Richard was invited to fly to Redmond, Washington to meet with Bill Gates and tour The Microsoft Corporation later that year.
Also before Richard's tenure, the ICS did not have a budget, the ICS magazine was only hap hazard, and there was no paid advertising for the ICS magazine. (The magazine had the highest ad revenues during Richard's ICS Presidency, ever.) The ICS BBS was only part time (almost always down during the weekends), and the ICS had no national presence what-so-ever. ICS publicity was by word of mouth and facilities were poor to none. The database was in shambles and there was no audit committee at all. The ICS Corporation had not communicated with the State of Indiana for the previous two years and was considered dead. Richard helped resolve all those problems and pushed to get the non-profit, 501 (c) 3, status the ICS currently enjoys.
In the past fifteen years that Richard has been with the ICS he has helped hundreds of ICS members learn to enjoy and use their computers to their fullest. Richard’s comment: “Seeing all those nascent computer users grow to become experts and go off on their own is a wonderful feeling in a mixed sort of way. I miss them not needing my help anymore, but am glad they're now out on their own. I have hundreds of friends that I regularly communicate with through e-mail that I would not have met if it weren’t for the ICS.”
Richard is very proud to have been instrumental in bringing the Indianapolis Computer Society into the "Information Super Highway or Internet Age."
