NAAS MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI
NAS MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI
Dec. 1965 to July 1966.
My work here at Meridian consisted of compartment cleaning. I lived in barracks 204 and worked the upper deck in barracks 203. Everyday I cleaned bathrooms and then swept, mopped, waxed, and buffed the passageway. On Fridays I cleaned the bathrooms (heads), swept, stripped the old wax off the decks, put down new wax, and then buffed the decks. If I passed inspection at 1000 hours I was released for the day. Usually I packed an AWOL bag and headed to Jacksonville (a trip of 525 miles - I hitchhiked).
Some names that I remember are: Howard Hobbs from Washington State, Myron Coolbaugh from upstate New York, L'Orange (one of my bosses) and Jeno (in charge of the guys on restrictions).

This base has been closed and all training commands moved to Pensacola, Florida.

VAP-62 was homeported at NAS, Jacksonville, Florida.

While stationed with VAP-62 I went:

TAD (January through March, 1968) to Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico.
(62 members on this DET: Chief Berhow, PT-2 Thibaudeah, PT-3 Orr, PHAN Austell, ADJ-2 Countryman, ADJ-2 Curtis, AMH-3 Orr, AME-3 Chaffin, ATN-2 Amell, PH-3 Madsen, PHAN Schola)

TAD (May through September, 1968) to the Naval Station, in Rota, Spain; then on to Stavanger, Norway for a six week stay and some fine liberty.
After returning to Rota we made a brief trip to the Naval Station at Naples, Italy, then flew to Athens, Greece to repair one of our planes and take some much needed rest (four days). Upon returning to Rota, our planes made a short trip to Turkey without the maintenance crew, returned to Rota and then we returned to Jacksonville, Florida.

TAD (May 1969 to September 1969) to the Naval Station, Agana, Guam with VAP-61;
and then on to Danang, Viet Nam with the First Marine AirWing and VQ-1 from Atsugi, Japan.
We then made a short trip to Townsville, Austrailia in August to set up a detachment - had some wonderful liberty there, too - and then back to DaNang, Viet Nam. On August 7, 1969, I reenlisted for 6 more years while in DaNang. W.L. Bush, Jr. LCDR, signed my reenlistment contract.

I am always interested in learning the whereabouts of former Navy friends. If you were ever in any of these squadrons or duty stations and remember me, please send me an email. I would love to hear from you and tell all the wonderful things that God has been doing in my life these past 30 years and discover the wonderful things happening in your life, also.

Thanks for all the memories from these Navy squadrons and duty stations and the men who made them work. I'd love to hear from all of them again.

God Bless,
Dan Eidson
