HAMSTERS_R_US!!
I am a breeder of Dwarf hamsters. I have been breeding Dwarf hamsters for almost 2 years. I breed and sell a variety of colors. The following is a quick guide to care and maintence of Dwarf hamsters.
HAMSTER CARE
By Brook Klitzke
CAGE AND ACCESSORIES
The best cage for the Dwarf hamster is a glass aquarium. Because of its size the Dwarf hamster can easily escape a wire cage that is intended for larger hamsters. The cage also needs good bedding. The best that I have found is Care Fresh. You must NEVER use cedar or any other soft wood, as they can be very dangerous to small animals. You should also NEVER use any fluffy bedding, as this is also dangerous. Your cage must also have a food dish, water bottle, and most importantly is a wheel. You may also put a toilet tube in there for them to chew on. They also like a bit of toilet paper (perfume & dye free) to chew up and build nests with.
FEEDING
Feeding your hamster a varied diet is very important. Your hamster should be fed once a day usually in the evening when they are waking up. Every day they should be fed fresh hamster mix, available at most stores. You should feed one TSP per Dwarf hamster every day. more for pregnant/gestating females. You should also give one treat food a day from this list:
(Apple, Banana, cheerios, dog biscuits (bht free), broccoli, cheese, scrambled or hard boiled egg, plain popcorn, carrots, celery, brussel sprouts, ect….)
DO NOT feed hamsters anything salty, spicy, sugary, or acidic!!! Also give leaf lettuce sparingly as it can cause diarrhea. Try one new food at a time and wait a few days before trying something different. As with us every hamster is different, what may bother one will not bother another. It will take some time to find what your hamsters like the most.
CARE AND ILLNESS
You should change the bedding in the tank every two weeks sooner if necessary. Occasionally your hamster’s nails will get too long. If this happens the best thing to do is put fine sandpaper on their wheel for a few days. As long as they do not chew the sand paper it will help file down their nails. If they do chew it put some in the bottom of a small box and let them run around in there for a few minutes. The most dangerous illness that you hamster may get is wet tail. This is noticeable by the hamster having diarrhea and their backside will be dirty. If your hamster gets this you should call the vet or a pet store immediately because your hamster will need to be treated or it will die.
This is just your basic care, for more in depth instructions a good information site is the complete hamster site. The address for that is www.hamsters.co.uk. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to call me.
