Opened in the 1920s, the Hamilton became a proud symbol of this gateway between Texas and Mexico, hosting travelers from all over the world and offering local residents an elegant setting for community events. By the 1990s, however, many floors were condemned, and vandalism, water damage, and insensitive alterations marred the building. Funds for the $13 million makeover came from several sources - including a $700,000 easement that allowed installation of a cell tower on the hotel roof, the highest point for hundreds of miles. Unique tilework, decorative painting, and light fixtures, all in a style that celebrates the region's Hispanic heritage, have been restored to their original splendor.
"This beloved landmark shines again, thanks to a visionary leadership of the city that has transformed hotel guestrooms into apartments for low-income elderly residents," said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust. "In this border region where widespread poverty and tight budgets force government to focus on basic services, this project shows that preservation is good for communities. The Hamilton's comeback has jump-started a downtown renaissance. Most important, the rebirth of the Hamilton Hotel has given some Laredo citizens a great place to live - and given an entire community a vibrant link with its past."
Washington, D.C. (September 24, 2002) - The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced today that the National Trust/HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation will be presented to the Hamilton Hotel on October 10, 2002, at the National Preservation Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. This Laredo, Texas landmark has been preserved and transformed into apartments for low-income elderly residents thanks to the City of Laredo and the Laredo Housing Finance Corporation and it demonstrates that preservation is an effective tool for creating affordable housing and community revitalization.
HUD Secretary Mel Martinez said: "The Hamilton Hotel restoration project is an excellent example of what an innovative public-private partnership can do for a city. The rich history of the building, built during the 1920s in the Spanish baroque revival style, is a link to Laredo's past that generations to come will view with pride. Equally important for the low-income, elderly residents of the Hamilton Hotel, this is more than a historical landmark - it is their home and real hope for a better way of life."
