Low Country Art by Pearce W. Hammond

"LONG DAY ON THE RIVER" by Pearce W. Hammond (American 1941 - ). The special talents of low country artist, Pearce W. Hammond, lie in his primitive paintings which are so reflective of low country life and peaceful times gone by. From his studio in Okatie, South Carolina overlooking the Chechessee River, he draws inspiration, mood, color and subject matter that are captured in his unique paintings. Using bright primary colors, acrylic paints, pen and ink, and mixed media, many of his paintings depict the Gullah Culture (African Americans living on the coastal sea islands of South Carolina) shrimping, fishing, gathering oysters, farming and living off the land. He attributes his putting brush to canvas to his famed Savannah-born Uncle, Johnny Mercer, who was famous for his prolific song writing career and winner of four Academy Awards. Mercer was also a talented painter and when he visited Savannah on vacation he encouraged his Nephew to pursue the craft at an early age. Mr. Hammond's low country art has been featured in many local and regional publications including South Carolina Magazine; Low Country Monthly; Hilton Head Monthly; Beaufort Gazette; The Island Packet; Bluffton Today; and the Savannah Morning News. His unique work is available from the Red Piano Too Gallery , St. Helena Island, SC; and from the Filling Station Art Gallery; Bluffton, SC.
