WILLIAM GRIERSON, Esq. of Bardannoch - Page 66
WILLIAM GRIERSON, Esquire of Bardannoch, late (Lieutenant-Colonel) of the Dumfries, Roxburgh & Selkirk Militia - Page 66
This was originally sent by Paul D. Chilvers-Grierson, as remarked in paremphasis below. I am doing protracted work on the Baronets of Lag.
Below, William Grierson, Esquire was born August 7th, 1778, married Jane Beattie, daughter of Thomas Beattie, of Crieve, Dumfries-shire, Scotland and he (William) died November 30th, 1865. William was the younger brother of the 6th Baronet of Lag, Sir Alexander Gilbert Grierson, both being the sons of the 5th Baronet of Lag, (Sir) Robert Grierson who died on 8th August, 1839, aged 106 and is now identified as having been buried at Mouswald Parish Church in "the Aisle". Margaret Elizabeth Grierson or Gordon below is the daughter of (Lieutenant-Colonel) William Grierson who died on November 30th, 1865 having married 1st on January 25th, 1860 (dissolved by divorce) to David Baird Hope-Johnstone and married 2ndly on April 21st, 1871 to John Henry Gordon, and she died March 26th, 1918.
He is buried at St Mary's in Dumfries. This is from the gravestone.
Sacred to the memory of WILLIAM GRIERSON, Esquire of Bardannoch, late (Lieutenant-Colonel) of the Dumfries, Roxburgh & Selkirk Militia, & second son of the late (Sir) ROBERT GRIERSON of Lag, (Baronet 5th) & the (Lady) MARGARET GRIERSON, who died at Dumfries, 30th November, 1865 aged 87 years & also of JANE BEATTIE his beloved wife, who died at Edinburgh 12th April, 1853 aged 52 years & also THOMAS BEATTIE GRIERSON, (Lieutenant) in Her Majesty's 8th The Kings Regiment, their only son, who died at Umballa, East Indies 4th September, 1857 aged 30 years. His death was occasioned by Fever & Ague brought on by some months of over exertion and constant exposure to Climate during the Monsoon at the protracted siege of Delhi, where he eminently distinguished himself by his Gallant Bearing in many a hard fought action, under the walls of that City and in commemoration of which his Brother Officers caused a Monument to be erected over his Grave.
Also of JOHN HENRY GORDON, Eldest Son of Mr. and The (Lady) ISABELLA GORDON & Son-in-Law of the above (Lieutenant-Colonel) GRIERSON who died 14th February, 1902. Matt 24.44.
Also of MARGARET ELIZABETH GRIERSON or GORDON, Widow of the above JOHN HENRY GORDON and Daughter of the above (Colonel) WILLIAM GRIERSON, who died at Florence, 26th March, 1918.
Being 87, William would have been born 1778/9, which would tie in with the census age.
