John Grierson of Lag got Bargatton - Page 64
Notes by Paul D. Chilvers-Grierson, descendant of Lag family - Page 64
Laurieston is close to Castle Douglas, just below Loch Ken. Just had their school closed down because of too few pupils. There is no sign of Pluckamin on the map now, but Bargatton and Bargatton Hill are still there.
One of the Griersons of Bargatton was a member of Parliament, later it seems the line died out (at least in Scotland). They descended from the marriage of John Grierson (of Lag) and Egidia Kennedy, Bargatton came into the family through the latter.
I quote Robert Grierson's manuscript [remarks in [] are from me]:
"John Griersonof Lag got Bargatton in Balmaghie 1557-75 (R. of G.S.), through the marriage with a Kennedy already referred to. His second son John got Bargatton, and founded a branch of the family which lasted till at least 1713, when we find the last of them we hear of in prison in Dumfries for debt (Mor.Dict.Decis. No. 11,805). This was one of the most important branches of the family. In 1642 they acquired the 4 merk land of Little Airds or Livingstone [on the west of Loch Ken/River Dee], and the 5/ land of Boatcroft [also west of the Dee, just below Loch Ken near Glenlochar, upstream from Threave Castle], also the 22/ land of Irongennoch &c all in Balmaghie (R. of G.S.). They acquired the lands of the Griersons of Bardarroch as well. Grierson of Bargatton was the member of Parliament for Kirkcudbright 1643-49, and about the same time he was a prominent member of the Covenanters War Committe for that County."
