In a letter dated February 11th, 2006, from Philip John Hamilton-Grierson of "PITLUNDIE" concerning the Griersons of Larbreck - with other items noting the receipt of three envelopes - the 2nd envelope contains "Trousseau taken out by (Colonel) [James] Grierson - & Sundries sent home from America." -- [The National Archives ~ Griersons family of Larbreck: legal papers and corresp (GD1/1394) ]

LETTER - At a Council held at his Excellency's House in Savannah on Thursday the 20th day of September, 1781 ~ Present ~

His Excellency (Sir) James Wright, Baronet, the Governor in Council Read a Memorial of (Sir) Patrick Houstoun & the (Reverend) Mr. Seymour, Executors of [Colonel] JAMES GRIERSON, Esquire, Deceased, also a Letter from (Sir) Patrick Houstoun on which His Excellency observed to the Board, the singular service (Colonel) [JAMES] GRIERSON has been of, to the public in general, by conducting & transacting all public Business at Augusta, not only as Magistrate, but also as Colonel of the Regiment of Militia [2nd Regiment - Militia], that his whole time & attention were devoted to the public Service from May, 1780 to June, 1781 ~ when he was Cruel Murdered after the Capitulaton of (Colonel) Brown : That it is well known that Rebels Murdered him in Cold Blood, after the capitulation, & when he was a prisoner of War, and in his own House, merely on account of his Loyalty, Zeal & great Exertions, to Support Government & the Laws, & authority of the Province against Rebellion ~

That he had at his Death a just Demand on the Province for an sum amounting to £814.4 ~ Stirling for money expended and for provisions & for subsisting the Militia & a enclusion of Demand for his time & service & which the province is not now in a Condition to pay. that his three infant sons, one about Eleven [11] years of age, one about Seven [7], & the other about five [5]. He conceived, has a most just & equitable claim on this Country for some Assistance & support, their Father having lost his life in its Service - Yet he apprehended this must be an Act of the Legislature, as they may not meet for some time. He had desired W. Seymour / who keeps a School to take them into his House, and Board & Educate them until further orders; and proposed that until the meeting of the Legislature, and they determine on what ought to be done in the Care, the Expence of the Board & Education of the children should be paid out of the Monies to be drawn for in Consequence of the ______? of both Houses of the 7th July last. He which the Board on making Consideration of the Circumstances of the case, approved of and advised accordingly. ~

Note: is there some question here as to the date of (Colonel) James Grierson's Murder, considering that the inventory is done either before his death or back dated. Probably both.

(Colonel) [James] Grierson, (Colonel) Waters, & (Doctor) Johnson's Memorials were Preferred to the Lords of the Treasury about the 24th March, 1784 they are referred by their Lordships to the Commissioners appointed by Act of Parliament last Sessions for examining & auditing the Public Accounts of the Kingdom, as (Colonel) [James] Grierson's Accounts were audited & examined by the Assembly of Georgia it only remains a Matter of them to lay the votes of the House before the Commissioners : Butt all _____ of this nature must come before the Commissioners in their Turn ; The Commissioners are now examing the Commanders in _____& the Companies who Acted in America during the late War, as soon as those examinate ones are over, (Colonel) [James] Grierson's will come in course.
