"The late (Sir) A[lexander] W[illiam] Grierson, Baronet, of Lag, Dumfries-shire, whose sudden death last Saturday at SOUTHSEA, HANTS, [SouthSea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England], was briefly announced in our columns yesterday, was a little over 70 years of age. He was the last surviving son of the late (Sir) ALEXANDER GILBERT GRIERSON, of Lag, by his marriage with ELIZABETH, only daughter of the late (Honorable) RICHARD DALZELL, of Glenae, N.B., and granddaughter of ALEXANDER, Earl of Carnwath. He was born in 1807, and for some years held an officers' commission in the 78th Highlanders. He succeeded to the title and honours as seventh [8th] Baronet on the death of his brother in 1846. He married (Miss) ANNE DAY, younger daughter of Mr. ROBERT DAY. The late baronet leaves no surviving male relative, and therefore the title, which was created in 1685, is presumed to have become extinct.

THE GRIERSON BARONETCY.-- Mr. J. Foster writes to correct the statement made in the obituary notice of (Sir) ALEXANDER [WILLIAM] GRIERSON, Baronet, in The Times, [London], "that the baronet leaves no surviving male relative, and therefore the title, which was created in 1685, is presumed to have become extinct." Mr. Foster says the late baronet's late brother, WILLIAM CHARLES [GRIERSON], a commander in the Navy, married on the 3rd October, 1854, EMMA SOPHIA WEST (widow), daughter of MICHAEL COMERFORD, of Portsmouth, (Stationer) (as recorded in the Register-General's office, Somer-set house). By this marriage he had, with other issue two sons, of whom the elder, ALEXANDER DAVIDSON GRIERSON, succeeds as 8th baronet, and was born on the 30th November, 1858. As this baronetcy was created on the 25th of March, 1685, with remainder to heirs male, it seems superfluous to add that it is almost impossible that it should become extinct."
