["If "yr s" means younger son, then "ss" in this context must mean "senior son", which he was:"- Paul D. C.-Grierson].

["Well spotted. The Hamilton-Griersons as opposed to the Griersons of Dalgonar who are buried at Dunscore, have their family grave in Edinburgh at the Dean Cemetary. My father, mother, aunt, grandfather & grandmother are all buried there. The reference to James Dalrymple as being a stepson of Margaret Grierson is a bit confusing. Her husband, John Hamilton was the son of (Colonel) James Hamilton who was a friend of (General) Bolivar in Venezuela & was granted huge areas of Venezuela by Bolivar. In 1819 he introduced the first steam boats into South America (built in Glasgow) & used them to run a service for Bolivars troops up the River Orinoco. Unfortunately when he died in Venezuela along with his eldest son Augustus (godson of Augustus (Duke) of Sussex a son of George 3rd) all the lands were lost along with 40,000 head of cattle. (Colonel) James was married to MARION ANDERSON whose mother was "Bonnie Jean Dalrymple" friend of (Sir) Walter Scott & daughter of David Dalrymple whose title was (Lord) Westhall. The James Dalrymple could have been a cousin by marriage but certainly not a stepson." - P. J. H.-Grierson].

(Sir) Philip James Hamilton-Grierson
Born: March 9th, 1851, Burntisland, Fife, Scotland; married April
27th, 1881, LILIAS KIRKPATRICK, daughter of (Dep. Surgeon General)
James Kirkpatrick. Philip James Hamilton assumed the surname of
Grierson on succeeding his uncle, JAMES GRIERSON, of Dalgonar,
Dumfries-shire, Scotland - [The Culture of MacGregor].

Father: JAMES HAMILTON, of Edinburgh, C.A.
Mother: MARGARET GRIERSON, daughter of Philip Grierson, son of James
Grierson, of Dalgonar, Dumfries-shire, Scotland - Margaret Grierson
married John Hamilton, August 20th, 1848, Dumfries, Keir, Scotland
(Surname Index to Marriages, 1991, batch film no., M118334, serial
sheet no., 0139). Margaret Grierson was one of three children, viz.:

(1) James Grierson, (2) Helen Grierson, married in April, 1848,
Patrick Borrowman, Minister of Glencairn, and afterwards first Free
Church minister of that parish, & (3) Margaret Grierson, above, who
married John Hamilton, accountant in Edinburgh, Scotland [August
20th, 1848, Dumfries, Keir, Scotland].

The only surviving son, Philip James Hamilton-Grierson inherited Dalgonar on the death of his Uncle, James Grierson, and then took the name of Grierson (i.e. Hamilton-Grierson). He was incidentally my precedent for adding the surname [Grierson] to Chilvers, from my father's mother, sister of (Professor) Philip Grierson, the last male of the main Dalgonar line. Philip James Hamilton-Grierson married Lilias Kirkpatrick of the Closeburn family, and they had two sons & two daughters - He was also Sheriff Subscitute at Banff and Aberdeen and Solicitor to the Inland Revenue in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have this information from Robert Grierson, solicitor in Glasgow, the half-brother of my great grandfather Philip Henry Grierson.
