Joe Tompkins, United States Paralympian & More!
Joseph Tompkins was a recreational skier before being paralyzed in a 1988 car accident that left him without the use of his legs.
In January 1989, he started as an arroya sled “sit skier” at the Eaglecrest Ski area in Juneau, Alaska. He rapidly progressed to a mono-ski in the following years.
In 1996, thanks to the Juneau (Alaska) Lions Disabled Ski Program and local and Native Corporation donations, Joe enrolled in Winter Park, Colorado’s heralded disabled ski program.
Joe has been an active member of the United States Disabled Alpine Men’s Ski Team (USDAST) since May 1999. He has made great strides to compete successfully and meet all of his goals. He currently carries the title of the fifth best mono-skier in the United States and the twelfth best in the world!
Joe is 6 foot 5 inches tall and weighs 226 pounds. He is an Alaska Native, ¼ blood Tlinget tribe. Joe’s hometown is Juneau, Alaska.
In March 2005, Joe one first place in the Disabled World Cup downhill race in Kloster’s Switzerland.
In February of 2005, Joe and other USDAST members made history by participating in the exhibition series of the ninth Winter X Games in Aspen, CO.
During January 2004 in Wildschoenau, Austria, Joe won the Disabled World Cup Super-G competition in addition to doing very well in other races he participated in.
In January 2003, Joe placed second over both able-bodied and mono-ski competitors in the Huntsman’s Cup Super-G race in Park City, Utah.
One of Joe’s major goals was to race in the 2002 Paralympics, of which he accomplished. Not only did he participate, he placed sixth in the Winter Games as the top U.S. racer in his class.
After entering his second season with the USDST (and after breaking both legs), Joe won 6th place in the downhill competition at the 2000 World Cup Championships.
He also won the first Inaugural Disabled World Cup race, a men's downhill competition at Breckenridge, Colorado in December 1999.
Joe’s most challenging goal is to be selected to participate in the 2006 Paralympics. His performances during the year 2004 and 2005 will be significant factors in the selection process.
In addition to his phenomenal ski record, Joe is an avid motivational speaker. He speaks to several sponsored corporate events, victim’s panels and M.A.D.D. members as well as children and young adults from elementary to high school and beyond.
Joe is a tremendous leader to his teammates, family and friends. He’s powerhouse of positive energy, charisma and wisdom. When one meets Joe for the first time, your life is forever changed. He's a can-do positive, happy kind of guy, while at the same time very professional.
