The SILVER RABBIT - 'The Sterling Breed'
The Silver Rabbit is thought to be one of the oldest rabbit breeds, possibly arriving in Europe in the 16th century. The breed as we know it today is said to have been developed in England in the 19th century.
Silver rabbits come in three recognized varieties; Black, Brown and Fawn. The ideal coat is evenly sprinkled with white hairs, providing a sharp contrast to the base color. The weight for mature animals is between 4 and 7 pounds, with an ideal of 6 pounds. They are a medium length rabbit, with a slight taper to the body.
I purchased my Silvers from Clem Steinhoff of Wisconsin at the 2003 ARBA Convention in Wichita. My first babies will be ready to show in the fall of 2004. I am very excited about this breed, and hope to promote them in this area as they are not very common.
