THE LIONHEAD RABBIT
The charming Lionheads are the newest member of our critter population. We aquired a black SM doe from Faye Scheef of Nebraska. Rabbits from Welsh's Rabbitry of Colorado have also been added to our foundation stock. (In theory this was supposed to be my hubby's breed, but I'm hooked on them too now!)
In 2005 we added a Tort buck, Cimmaron Nazareth and a Sable Point doe, Welsh's Wendy. I am hoping to add another doe from Welsh's and also one from Mossy Possum in 2006
The first Lionheads that were used as a basis for any concentrated breeding programs in the United States where imported in 1998 by JoAnne Statler of Minnesota. In the next couple years other breeders brought additional stock into this country. Tom Coats of Maryland, Theresa Mueller and Cheryl Rafoth of Washington State, Toni Tubbs also of Washington and Bob Whitman in Texas. These importations along with hybridizations made throughout the United States have produced the American Lionhead Rabbit as we know it today.
The Lionhead Rabbit is not a recognized breed by the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association). This means they still have to go through the presentation process before a jury of ARBA judges.
Torts passed presentation at the 2005 ARBA Convention!!!!
They will reach breed status when a presenter has passed three presentations within a five year period and the ARBA board supports the Standard Committee's recommendation that they become a breed. Until then, they can be shown at ARBA rabbit shows as an exhibition breed under the working standard if the entry is accepted by the Show Secretary for each show. Contact the show secretary, and if they give approval submit a copy of the working standard with your entry form.
