Greetings.
My name is Greg Jones, however my friends call me GJ.
You may have seen me before. I have written for several newspapers, industry magazines, authored a couple of books, given nearly five thousand sales presentations and delivered over two thousand lectures on the subjects of sales, marketing, advertising and business development.
But the main thing that I would like for you to know is that I walk the talk. Unilke so many people today offering information about sales and marketing, I still earn a living as a Professional Salesperson.
What I would like to do for you today is provide some brief insight into what sales and marketing is as well as what it isn't.
With that let's begin.
So many people are intimidated by selling and marketing.Just the thought of doing it has some people quivering in their boots or saying to themselves:
"I would rather have a root canal than have to sell something"
I guess the next thought is everything that you have heard about the dreaded "cold call".
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......
Frightening isn't it?
Well it should be. The painful thing about sales and marketing is the fact that most of us are operating on fiction or should i say something that we have gathered from other people.
Let's face it; most of what we learned about life in general we picked it up at home. Hey mom meant well when she said get an education and good job. But have you noticed something about the economy lately?
Yup, the good ole jobs are leaving and in their place are a host of SALES & MARKETING POSITIONS!
So not to knock our parents, but what we need are:
"just the facts Maam...
To provide all of you with a little insight into the foundations of some of what we feel, here is a little history regarding the myths surrounding sales and salespeople. It all started with a gentleman by the name of Henry David Thoreau. He once stated
"build a better mouse trapp and the world will beat a path to your door".
Well readers not only did Henry never build or sell a mousetrap, but no one beat a path to ole Henry's door either. The reality is that he might have been snorting crack coccaine. (smile)
Sales has nothing to do with who is the best. This is why so many people think that sales is about just get your message in front of enough people and the rest will take care of itself. Sales is a numbers game. Sound familiar?
Well this is all B.S!
Sales is about identifying those people or organizations that have a predisposition to what you are offering which makes sense to their bottom line.
The system in which you and I accomplish this is known as "marketing".
Therefore if you were to stop and think about it for a second; we are all selling something.
So maybe what we need is greater clarification regarding the definition of what sales and marketing truly are.
Fair enough? Lets go for it..
Sales is nothing more than communication.
Marketing is the system in which we communicate.
Simple huh? Well truth generally is. However, implementing this principle or truth is the biggest challenge. The focus of this site will be to provide you with a working plan containing both principles and strategies so that you can accomplish your goal(s).
The bonus is that they work whether you are a salesperson or not.
