THE FORUM ROMANUM

This Month the Ancient Historian Explains:

The Forum Romanum

The Forum Romanum was the earliest forum in Rome. Situated between the Palatine, Quirinal, and Capitoline Hills, it was built in the late seventh century B.C. The site was originally a marsh that the Romans drained by building the Cloaca Maxima, or Great Sewer. The earliest gladitorial fights took place in this forum. It was also the place in which the important political figures in Rome would erect statues and busts of themselves. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire the Forum was abandoned.
