I Need Advice

Recognizing When I Need Advice

An Advice Profile...

* Mary is a mother of two small children with two different fathers. For various reasons, mostly immaturity, her relationships didn't work out with either father. Finally, she found herself in another relationship with a person she considered "pretty decent" but not the love of her life. She knew the relationship was starting to get much more serious, especially for him and she found herself confused and afraid to make a decision about whether to go further on or whether to let him go.

Mary's mother really liked Mark. He seemed to be everything that Mary needed. He was mature. He had a good job. He had life goals. He was kind to her and seemed to be really good with her grandchildren. She encouraged Mary to stop "acting like a little girl" and see the good thing she had in front of her.

Mary's girlfriends, especially Pat, didn't like Mark. He wasn't personable enough. He lacked something. And they heard all the stories. They knew he didn't drive Mary crazy like her last child's father. To them - that was passion. That was what she should wait for.

Mary was confused and was receiving conflicting advice from her loved ones. It was clear that at this point, she needed some perspective from an outside source. Finally, Mary admitted to herself "I Need Advice"from an expert.

Where should I go?

Of course, when a person says - I need advice - they are usually looking for someone to listen to their problems and then politely tell them what to do, but an expert wouldn't do this.

You can find a variety of individual advisors, organizations and associations to help you with advice on a myriad of subjects. Check the National Advice Center.

For instance, if you need advice on personal matters like relationships, depression, dating, parents, workplace, marriage, adultery, parenting, friends etc. then you may want to either try a traditional therapist whose office you visit during a specific time and day and you pay about $90-125 per visit. Or if you rather get advice right now, in the comfort of your home or office, and for more affordable rates $25-55 per session online counseling may be the best bet for you.

What you should be looking for in either case is an expert willing to take the appropriate amount of time to listen, assess your needs, and offer the appropriate type of help. Someone or somewhere you feel comfortable and relaxed. It's important to be able to tell the entire truth when seeking help - or how helpful will the advice really be?
