Helping a Friend

A heart Warming Tale

Hi

I have decided to set up this web page in order to tell you about a wonderful young woman that I am trying to help create a new life for herself after a traumatic upbringing.

A Brief History
She is 22 years old, lives in the Philippines and she has been on her own since she was 14. Her childhood was very traumatic having been beaten by her father and forced to live with relatives between the years of 9 to 14 during in which time she was forced to look after the house and work in the fields, at 14 she was forced to runaway since she no longer felt safe living with her uncle.

She was born with Scoliosis (a curved spine), to make matters worse the beatings by her father and the heavy manual work she had to undertake as a child has caused her to develop a hunch back. Although the scoliosis should have been diagnosed as a child and rectified by a back brace, it wasn’t because she had to keep moving from village to village looking for work. This meant that by the time she was in a position do anything about the scoliosis her only option was surgery. I sent her some money so that she could visit the surgeon a Dr T. (name with held for professional reasons) who is well known in the field of scoliosis surgery. After I spoke with Dr T. on the telephone it was decided that she needed the surgery sooner rather than later because the curvature of the spine was getting worse and effecting her lungs and heart, also if the curvature got much worse it would be unsafe to operate. I decided that there was no other option but to pay for the surgery which I did in August 2005, and I am pleased to say it went very well, and although her spine couldn’t be straightened completely it is 50% better. (see photo’s below for before and after). She is now on a course of medication which I am currently financing.

After she ran away she had to undertake various jobs some of the best being maid and house keeper, some of the worst working on a fishing boat and a farm. She would work for 2 years to earn enough money to finance a year at school, and she repeated this process for 7 years until she was able to graduate from high school at 21 years of age. As a student she was outstanding and captain of various academic teams.

My Goal
In the Philippines there is no welfare state so if you have no money you have no chance. I am not a wealthy guy and the medical expenses are pretty high in the Philippines but it is my intention to try to give someone who has overcome great hardship and shown tremendous enthusiasm for education her chance to have a better life and a decent future.

My goal now is to see her gain a university degree, ideally she would have liked to take a degree in Pharmacy, however this course is too expensive for me so we have agreed that she will do a degree in computer science. I have now enrolled her in her first term which will begin in November 2005.

The Future
