Florida State Baseball Team Picked Fourth By Coaches

'Noles will play a total of 19 games against teams ranked among the top 15.

The Florida State baseball team was voted No. 4 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Preseason College Coaches Poll as selected by 41 Division I head baseball coaches representing the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The Seminoles finished the 2000 season with a 53-19 record and a national ranking of No. 3 after advancing to the semifinals of the College World Series for the second straight season. FSU returns six position players and one starting pitcher from last year's team.

"I think this year we have a good mix of young guys and veterans," said head coach Mike Martin. "I expect this team to get better each week. If we do that, we'll be a very good baseball time when April rolls around."

ACC rival Georgia Tech was voted No. 1 followed by LSU, Southern California, FSU and Clemson. In addition to Georgia Tech and Clemson, the Seminoles are also scheduled to face No. 8 Miami, No. 9 Stanford and No. 14 Florida this season. Florida State Baseball Selected Third in Preseason ACC Poll

Seminoles open the season at home against Western Kentucky on Feb.3rd.

The Atlantic Coast Conference's nine head coaches selected Georgia Tech as the unanimous top pick to win the conference championship in 2001. The Yellow Jackets return nine starters from their 2000 squad which captured the ACC Championship Title as well as the regular season crown and finished the season 50-16. Georgia Tech tallied 81 points, including all nine first place votes.

Clemson comes in second with 69 points, twelve behind preseason favorite Georgia Tech. The Tigers finished 51-18, 17-7 in the league last season and ended the 2000 season with a trip to the College World Series.

The Florida State Seminoles fill the third place slot with 64 points, while Wake Forest placed fourth in the balloting with 55 points. The Demon Deacons were followed by North Carolina and NC State who tied for fifth place with 40 points each. Virginia was selected to finish seventh with 26 points, Duke eighth with 18 points and Maryland ninth with 12 points.
