SHAMAN KING ----- FURYOKU GUIDE
WHAT IS FURYOKU?
Furyoku: Furyoku is a shaman's level of personal power - it's used to form an oversoul. A person is born with a set amount of furyoku but can increase it through very-near-death/figurative death/death. A shaman can develop his oversoul and increase his furyoku apparently infinitely. Higher furyoku is desirable, but furyoku is not a be-all end-all in a shaman battle.

FAQ's
Terminology
Shaman: a person who is a living bridge between humans and the spiritual world. (On shamans: Shamans, for some reason, seem to prefer high places. I suspect this is because many of them are short.)
Shaman King: Title of the series. Also the shaman who wins the Shaman Fight and apparently meets/gets as his/her main spirit the Great Spirit/King of Spirits/Spirit King/Kami-sama/God. The Shaman Kings have been known as saviors in the past (it's postulated that this includes Jesus and Buddha.)
Shaman Fight: The fight run every 500 years to decide the Shaman King. It happens at a time when a comet (see: Ragoh) passes by the Earth. Shamans fight to decide Shaman King because, Yoh explains, it's necessary to test the shamans under extreme conditions, and a fight will do that.
Patch/Pache: The Patch are an American Indian tribe who live in the Southwest - we're pretty sure Takei invented them from a combination of peoples, because Takei is very, very good about detail when he's doing traditions or people, and there's nothing on the Patch. The Patch have officiated the Shaman Fight for a long time, apparently.
Oversoul: A shaman is capable of merging a spirit with an inanimate object, but when a shaman does so, some energy visibly leaks out - that energy is an oversoul.
A shaman fight/battle: Sitemaster's term for a single battle, such as the preliminaries. In the preliminaries, a shaman battle had only three rules: 1) There are three battles, each worth one point. Two points gets a person into the next round, so a person needs to win two fights. 2) Contestants must use oversoul. 3) A person loses if he or she can no longer maintain oversoul (this also means that if you're killed in a Shaman Fight, you lose, as you can no longer keep up your oversoul). Most shaman battles run by the third rule, in which you live if you can...well, live through it.
A higher level of furyoku is useful, but it's not everything. Shaman battles are also tests of mental fortitude - a person who is uncertain, frightened, or angry may lose a shaman battle even if they have more furyoku then their opponent. As well, there are techniques for telling the way in which someone is going to attack by watching furyoku movements, which can give a person with smaller numbers greater advantage. As one character says, all the idea of furyoku does really is to limit a person's expectations on him or herself.
Tchou Senji Ryaketsu: A book written by a famous onmyouji which gives information on techniques of watching furyoku movements.
Onmyouji: A Japanese type of shaman who helps the spirits of the dead find peace (and apparently can read the future).
Itako: A Japanese shaman who is believed to be able to talk to the dead. In the manga, itako can summon spirits from heaven, hell, or earth.
Miko: A Japanese shrine priestess who speaks to the gods.
Kyonshii: zombie controlled by a specific person.
Manjien: A play on the word "Kojien" - a Japanese dictionary. Manjien takes the first character from Manta's name - this is what we call Manta's encyclopedia.
Who writes/draws it?
Hiroyuki Takei. AKA Takei-sama, Takei-san, Takei-sensei,
Drug imagery? What drug imagery?
Well, Yoh's name means "leaf." ...Marijuana leaf. And you'll see him wear more than one shirt with a cannabis leaf on there.
Peyote? Hello?
Lyserg Diethyl's name comes from "Lysergic Diethylamine" - LSD. Lyserg's spirit is Morphin/Morphine. Morphin is the spirit of a poppy flower (to which I say ow, Takei-sama).
Puns? What Puns?
.............Chocolove's jaguar is named Mic (Mick). I rest my case.
