Launched in 1965, Flori Roberts was the first department store line of cosmetics developed specifically for African-American women. Before Flori Roberts, African American women had to mix and match foundation and powder colors in order to achieve a suitable shade. Yet, since these colors were not formulated for darker skin tones, blending them often gave the skin a chalky, gray overcast. Because the Flori Roberts formulations were precisely designed to match the skin pigmentation of African-American women, the result was a diverse cosmetic line with a variety of natural looking shades for African-American women. In fact, one of Flori Roberts' best-selling shades has been around since the line's inception. Flori Roberts was also first to develop an AHA-inclusive product line specifically for African American women. This cutting edge mindset has kept Flori Roberts on the technological fast-track for over 30 years.
Flori Roberts is well-known for starting the trend to associate models with cosmetic lines. Billie Blair, one of the first African American runway models, was also a Flori Roberts model. Naturally, Flori Roberts went on to profile the first African American Miss America, Suzette Charles,
a well-recognized spokesperson for the line. Today, Flori Roberts products are sold through upscale and mid-fashion department stores like Caron Pirie Scott, Macy's and JCPenney. With thriving sales in major US markets and around the world, Flori Roberts' loyal clientele and ever-growing popularity maintains the line's position as an icon in the cosmetic industry.
