CGCM Conference 1921

GENERAL CONFERENCE
Convened at the Greenland Church, Ste. Anne, Manitoba
October 17-19, 1921
Moderator: F. C. Fricke
1921-1. Spreading of the Gospel
It was moved and carried: That according to the words of Jesus, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations" Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:15, more should be done to spread the gospel. A number of ministers were chosen for this ministry. Luke 10:1-5; Matt. 10:26.
1921-2. Financial Support of Ministers
It was unanimously decided to refer to Art. 3 of the 1909 Conference, which reads as follows: "We believe in a financial support of the ministers, so that they can spread the gospel and labor for this cause."
1921-3. Submissiveness of Ministers
Resolved, That in the administering of baptism, the Lord's Supper, and solemnizing marriages, the younger and less experienced ministers should be under the direction of the leading ministers or elders, since Peter says, "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves to the elder" (1 Pet. 5:1-5 ). Eph. 5:21. (Refer to Art. 3, 1939 Conference.)
1921-4. Qualifications for the Ministerial Office
In 1 Timothy 3:2-15 and Titus 1:5-9 we find the divine virtues as necessary conditions for the calling of ministers and elders or bishops. If, however, a brother, who after his conversion has fallen into sin, gives such convincing evidence of repentance that he has gained the confidence of the Church, we are of the opinion that such an one may be acceptable for the ministerial office if the elders, in unison with the Church, give their approval.
The above condition does not have reference to the life of a brother before his conversion.
In connection with the above article we believe and recognize that a minister who was excommunicated on account of fornication or false doctrine cannot be restored to the ministerial office.
1921-5. Marriage with Divorced Persons
Question: May a brother or sister again enter the state of matrimony after he or his companion has committed adultery?
Answer: Unanimously resolved to refer to the Savior's words in Matthew 19:9, as well as to article 25 of the larger confession of the martyr brethren in which it is said, "that they (married people) can be separated and permitted to marry another only for the cause of adultery and death." Compare also Menno Simons' Complete Works, in German, Part 1, p. 340; Spiegel der Wahrheit, Part 2, p. 99, Article 16; and Art. 11, 1896 Conference. (Refer to Art. 2, 1933 Conference; Art. 16, 1956 Conference Council; Art. 3, 1983 Conference; Art. 9, 1993 Conference.)
1921-6. Costly Clothing
Concerning the wearing of silks and costly apparel, we refer to Art. 17 of the 1896 Conference, the first paragraph which reads as follows: "We believe that the gospel does not give any regulations in what manner the cut of our clothing should be. But costly clothing, adorning and plaiting of the hair, and the wearing of gold and pearls are forbidden. The useless things, new fashions of pride, and such manner of cut of dress that are brought in and accepted which conform us to the world are sin. We should dress decently according to Christian rule, and not offensively. "
1921-7. Devotional Covering
How do we understand the apostle's words in 1 Corinthians 11:1-16? We believe and recognize that the sisters should wear a Christian devotional covering during worship as well as in praying and prophesying, as a sign of subjection. Give special attention to v. 10. (Refer to Art. 22, 1956 Conference; Art. 2, 1974 Conference.)
1921-8. Sunday School Quarterlies
It was considered best that we issue a new quarterly with changed text and comments for our own use, as soon as possible. Until that time, however, we will use the quarterly which we now have.
1921-9. Next Conference
Resolved, That the next Conference is to be held, the Lord willing, in the Newark Congregation near Ithaca, Michigan, in the year 1924.
