West Metro Boxing & Martial Arts News 5-6-02

Before getting into the most recent and by count number three of the Club Fights saga, Congratulations are in order for Duane Sanovia who competed in the "ToughMan" contest in St. Cloud, MN on April, 27th'02. Every once in a while luck will go your way as was the case for Duane in this tournament as he got a bye on Fri. night. Again things were in Duane's corner when he drew a brawler, who Duane let do his own work in wearing himself out.
By the second round Duane was able to open it up to the point the ref stepped in to stop the fight. This gets Duane in the final match against a hard hitting fighter from Burnsville, MN. Though the fight went to a decision, Duane was not victorious, this time.... I have by now sparred quite a number of rounds with Duane and have landed some big shots with no major effect so when Duane says "that guy hit hard" I'm confident it must be an understatement.
Congratulations to Duane in his win and hard fought bout for the championship. Your courage "at any age" is admirable.

And now for the Club Fights on 5-3-02.

Another fun show with "The Guys off the Street"
In a return to the ring Casey Hodges, who fought and won last time faced another tough "Street" guy, Andy Kukkola. Andy put up a great fight and forced a decision. That makes him
officially the first guy to go the distance with Casey. Heads up to Casey, who on several occasions could have taken advantage of his opponents misfortune, getting tangled in the ropes or losing balance, backed off in the spirit of competition within the confines of a sportsmanlike contest. Even though the " Street Guys" have no formal training, they have all behaved in a disciplined and respectful manner to each other and the officials. Next up was Casey's Bro. who fought another walk in, Dan Brisk. Dan was tough and in shape but Colin kept him at bay with his long jab and strong rear hand. By mid way through the second round the ref. stepped in to stop the fight. Dan hung in there after a tough first round and deserves respect for that. For most, fighting is a spectator thing. I admire the courage it takes to step in the ring.
Jeremy Zemlicka, of the MMAA (Minnesota Martial Arts Academy) did an exhibition (again) with Mark Lowry of West Metro Boxing. This was 2 one minute rounds to get warmed up as well as allow Colin to do some scouting. Apparently Colin liked what he saw as he agreed to match with Jeremy. Though Jeremy was the more polished fighter, Colin's Jab and rear upper cut found there mark on enough occasions to put Jeremy on notice. The remainder of the bout followed suit and Colin is now 2&0 in Club Fights boxing. Both of these guys are to be congratulated as they both demonstrated heart and respect for the sport of boxing.

From West Metro Boxing...sort of...
Frank Lowry, Bro. of Mark Lowry, did an exhibition against Eric Assen from the MMAA. Eric had considerably more fight experience, though I know for a fact Frank has been training for many years in karate and kickboxing. This was a three, one minute round x-bout, so there was a ref., but no judging or scoring. Both guys worked hard and stayed busy the whole time.

Another action packed Club Fights. Thank you's to; Rob Utter of West Metro Boxing for Judging, scoring and keeping time, Man this guy can multi task. Also from the West Metro Boxing gym as Judge was Hector Hinajosa. Paul Gergen of WMB acted as a judge as did Brad Kohler from The Ultimate Wrestling Championships. Brad also reff'd a couple bouts. Last but not least was Frank Lowry who not only judged but stepped up for exhibition duty for the second time out of only three shows.

Thanks also to the spectators and corner guys.

Next show is 5-24-02
weigh in at 6:pm
fights at 7:pm

Up coming events include;

5-17-02 Ultimate Wrestling in Owattona, MN.

5-18-02 The extreme challenge, mixed martial arts tournament at Spikers bar in Fridley. Winners of this tournament advance to a National event in Hawaii. Expect these guys to give it there all for the chance to gain national recognition.

In June we welcome Brad Kohler and some of the people he trains. Brad will be running The Ultimate Wrestling Championships from here, and we will cross train each other's fighters. This should be a great addition to West Metro Boxing. If Mixed Martial Arts is something you've wanted to try, Brad Kohler is the promoter to know in the upper mid west.
More photos in the newsletter are in the works as is having video tapes of the bouts from the previous shows available for sale.

We are always looking for fighters of any experience level.

Helpers for running the show are needed as well.

If you are interested in either let me know.

Thank you.

Mark Lowry
