Exotic pets
Dogs are wonderful. Cats aren't as nice, but they're okay. However, if you want a truly thrilling pet, try something unusual. Why not break out of the mold and adopt a pet that would truly catch someone's attention?
The list of choices is endless: snakes, lizards, tarantulas, giant pillbugs, scorpions... and myriad varieties in each classification. For snakes, one can get started with corn snakes, ball pythons, gopher snakes, bull snakes, or whatnot. An ambiotious keeper can even try a boa constrictor, or a red-tailed boa (as they're now often called). I do advise against Burmese pythons though, since burms can get to be pretty darned big.
For lizards, I recommend a leopard gecko, a bearded dragon or a green iguana. The latter two can get to be pretty large, so please read up on their caging requirements.
Emperor scorpions are nice too, but I only like them because they're unique. I'm not particularly fond of them at all.
Tarantulas are the best! Myriad colors, sizes, and temperaments. If you're a beginner, you might want to start with a Chilean rose hair or a Honduran curly hair. Personally though, I prefer the Chaco golden striped tarantulas and the Brazilian white knees. Oh, and I positively love my Goliath birdeater, although it would make a poor pet for beginners.
Here are some quick tips for snake care, which can help you avoid common pitfalls in herp keeping. And if a big hairy tarantula is more your speed, here are some simple tips on keeping these giant hirsute beasts.
