Simple Magic Chapter One
Hey, please e-mail any comments! No Flames please! I just use them to heat my freezing room!
Too many colors, too many giggles, too many smiles. As soon as Mina got on the bus she turned around to get off. The bus driver shut the door and mumbled what sounded like siddon. Moving to the back of the bus, she was thrown forward. Growling, she sank into the back seat.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to get away from her all too happy parents and the annoying thing called a brother, it was just that she didn’t want to got to the “Happy Valley Summer Camp for Girls”
“Welcome to Happy Valley” her councilor said none too enthusiastically as Mina entered her home for the next eight weeks. As she and the other girls got settled, Alyce explained the camp rules.
“No smoking, drinking, or other drugs. Never leave campus, and always be on time for camp activities. My rules are: no giggling, you can pretty much do what ever you want just as long as you aren’t sacrificing anything. Lunch is in an hour. Mina? I would like to speak to you privately.” If Mina was confused as to how Alyce knew her name, she hid it well as she stepped outside.
“Mina, there is someone I want you to meet” Alyce led her to a remote area of the forest surrounding the camp. With a loud clap, a boy with flaming red hair and bright emerald eyes appeared in front of the two.
“I am Jonathon. Mina, you must take me seriously when I tell you this. You are a sorceress. No, don’t laugh. It’s the truth. You really don’t belong here on Earth, but I must keep you here for now. While you are at camp, Alyce will teach you beginning magic. Let no one see you practice. It is a matter of live and death. I must leave now, but I will return. Goodbye. I’m so sorry Mina” And with another clap, he was gone.

Crashing through the brush, Lyz entered the clearing. Calling on the magic she kept bottle dup deep inside her, she searched the area for sorcery. A soft white glow appeared where Jonathon had been only minutes before. Detecting another presence, she snapped her head up. Stupid owl she thought as one swooped low over her head. If Jonathon was here, Mina must be nearby. Following the path of broken twigs and bruised leaves, she headed toward camp. Her master would be pleased, she had found the girl.

After a few weeks, Mina got used to little sleep. She had made Alyce proud, Mina had mastered two months of sorcery in three weeks.
“You will be ready for Jonathon to take you back soon”
“But what about the rest of camp?”
“We have excuses ready. Jonathon will meet you in the clearing next week at midnight. Don’t bother to bring anything, it will only slow you down. I’ll miss you”
“I’ll miss you too Alyce”
For Mina the next week flew by in a flurry. Along with the regular camp activities, Alyce was determined to teach Mina another two weeks of lessons.
“Why do I have to do this?” she complained after a particularly long lesson.
“Because you must be ready.”
“For what?”
“Time will tell. You must be patient.”
“But I’m not patient!”
“Hush do you want the others to hear? I only say you must be patient because I don’t know either, I just feel you must know this”
“Oh. When is Jonathon coming?”
“Tomorrow night at midnight. Like I said before”
“Ok”
“It’s time we get back to camp,” Alyce said, looking at her watch.” Just before they reached the camp, Alyce stopped. Giving Mina a hug, she reached deep into her jeans pocket. Pulling out a delicate silver chain, she placed it in Mina’s palm.
“The symbol on it will protect you from most evil sorcery.”
“Thank you Alyce. I will see you again, won’t I?”
“Only time will tell”

Mina’s last day of camp was spent filling out forms. By the end of the day, Mina felt she would scream if she had to fill out just one more form. After what felt like ages, lights out finally came. A little before midnight, she left the Alyce. Their goodbyes were cut short as Mina was suddenly swept off her feet and sucked into an area of total darkness. Quickly, Mina whispered the spell for light, but no light appeared.
“Jonathon? Are you here?” As quickly as she had appeared in that awful place, she was swept out.
“Mina? Are you ok? Where were you?”
“I-I-I don’t know” Mina choked.
“You probably don’t want to talk about it, but I need you to describe the place”
“It was just horrible! It was all black, and not even my spell for light would work. Jonathon, where was I?”
“I have no clue” Jonathon confessed, sounding as scared as Mina was, “Let’s get you to The King and Queen, they might know where you were.” Jonathon stood up and led Mina to a large chamber. Seated on two identical red and gold thrones were what Mina supposed were the King and Queen. Jonathon bowed and after a few seconds Mina realized she should two. She began to curtsy, then remembering that she wasn’t wearing a dress, tried to bow and somehow ended up on the floor. As the laughter subsided, Jonathon gave Mina a hand up.
“All you alright?” he asked.
“Only my dignity is hurt.” With a smile Jonathon turned back to the King and Queen. “King Henery. Queen Lilly, this is Mina”
“It’s a pleasure, I’m sure” Queen Lilly responded, “Cathryn, please show Mina to her rooms.” A pale blonde nodded and led Mina out of the huge hall.
After changing into her new black robes, Mina set out to find Jonathon waiting outside her door.
“No time for exploration now, it’s time for lessons. Follow me” Jonathon said blandly and started down the hall. Looking at the mass of hallways and doorways, she wondered if she would ever learn her was around. As if Jonathon had read her thoughts, he told her where some of the rooms were as her took her though the castle.
"Here is the underground, this is where we will do most of your training." He explained, after a short pause he continued. "We will start with producing fire, that is pretty simple. To produce fire, you concentrate on something very hot, like the sun. Then you think about the thing you want on fire, imagining it on fire. Watch this." Jonathon proceeded to concentrate on a torch in a bracket on the far wall. To Mina's surprise, within a few seconds the twigs were ablaze.
"Now you try."
Mina thought about the sun and the concentrated on the torch on the wall. It took her a few tries, but when she got it, it caught fire fast.
"Good, good. Now put it out. To do that you think of something cold, like ice. It's like producing fire but in reverse. Why don't you try it?"
"Ok." Mina concentrated on the torch. It went out after a few seconds of intense concentration.
"Ok, I think we have time for one more thing. Why don't we try light? To make light you hold your hand, palm up and say 'sparkle and shine'. See?" Jonathon held his hand up a repeated the three words. A soft red light filled the chamber.
"Why is your light red?"
"Oh, yes, magic has color."
"Huh?"
"Yes, it's usually inherited. Mine is red, as you saw earlier. Now why don't you try the spell?"
Mina held her hand out and said the few words. Dazzling bright blue light filled the room. As Mina's eyes were trying to adjust to she sudden light, she felt someone closing her hand. The light suddenly went out. As Mina blinked to clear her vision, she heard a female voice, think with what she thought was a British accent, say "You might want to think 'sparkle and shine' instead of saying it. That might make it less bright. By the way, I'm Claire, your future teacher of water magic's. Lilly told me that I should begin today."
"My lessons with Jonathon aren't quite finished yet. Would you mind waiting?"
"Not at all. Do you mind if I watch? I new at this teaching thing so I'd like to get and idea of how to go about it."
Jonathon continued Mina's lessons for a while longer. By the end of the hour, she had learned how to control her light.
As Mina left with Claire, Jonathon called out "Same time tomorrow, Mina. Is that ok with you?"
"Yep, that's fine. I'll meet you here."
As Mina swept our, Jonathon sighted with envy. Her magic was so strong. If only he was that strong. Then he would show those murdering traitors he used to call friends.
