Racing Alassiel Continued
Well, I tried, Alassiel thought sadly. I hope she doesn’t do anything stupid like sell Nithron. When Alassiel got home, she cooled Bellethiel and gave her a good grooming. She put hay in the corner of her stall and made sure the bucket was full of water. Whew, I’m so tired! It’s a good thing that bucket wasn’t empty; I’m too tired to go down to the stream! Alassiel thought gladly.
Alassiel went up to her house and fell into bed. Soon, she fell into a heavy, dreamless sleep.
At the Evenstar stakes, 2 weeks later........
“I’m finally here!!” Alassiel said with excitement. Part of her was sad, though, because Santiel would not be racing today. She had given up. Alassiel wore a stunning purple-silvery colored velvet dress. It set off her dark brown hair with blonde streaks. It also matched Bellethiel’s coat very well.
Then she saw something that made her freeze in fear, Santiel and Eruadan, talking to Sellion. Sellion was wearing Nithron and Santiel’s race colors, he was also holding Nithron’s reins.
Then suddenly it hit Alassiel like a ton of bricks: Sellion was racing Nithron for Santiel! Santiel hadn’t given him up, but she thought that she was out to make some money racing him. Alassiel waved, but Santiel paid no attention to her. Well, Alassiel thought, if she wants to be that way, fine. She just didn’t have to ignore me. What happened to the Santiel I used to know? Alassiel thought with feelings of anger and sadness.
“There’s the horn!” Her mother shouted excitedly, “Time to mount up and ride to the starting line, Have fun honey and be careful!!”
Her mother boosted Alassiel into the saddle. After adjusting her dress, she put her feet into the stirrups and nudged Bellethiel into a trot. They got to the starting line.
All the horses were lined up, breathing and snorting excitedly, for they knew this was a race. Now all the horses were lined up in a row.
The horn sounded and at that very instant, the horses were off. Alassiel scrubbed her leather reins up and down Bellethiel’s neck, asking for more speed. And Bellethiel instantly answered with a strong burst of speed. Alassiel moved with the horse. They were right off the leaders, just the position Alassiel had hoped for.
Alassiel looked under her arm, Nithron was running terribly. She could tell he was tiring and he wasn’t even three fourths of the way into the race! Alassiel knew why, she almost smirked at that very instant. Santiel hadn’t been working with him enough.
Suddenly, Bellethiel swayed to the left and Alassiel came back from her day dream. She mentally scolded herself, for not paying attention to what she was doing, they were almost to the top of the stretch and the closing horses were starting to make their moves.
She scrubbed her reins up Bellethiel’s now lathered and sweaty neck. She asked Bellethiel, and she gave it. They were going to finish in style, Alassiel thought. They were closing in on the leaders, and then Nithron came barreling up and crashed into Bellethiel’s side.
Alassiel didn’t have time to think about what had happened to Sellion. Her mare had started to falter, but Alassiel pulled her up, and flicked her whip in front of Bellethiel’s eye. She didn’t want to use her whip, but she let Bellethiel know that the whip was there and Alassiel would use it if she needed to. The valiant mare charged on.
They were gaining on the leaders, and then they pulled ahead. Alassiel almost gave a battle-cry shout when they pulled ahead. They were going to win!! They thundered under the finish line, a long ways away from the leaders. Then it happened.
Bellethiel faltered without warning. Alassiel was so surprised she didn’t have time to react. She jumped away from the falling mare. Alassiel couldn’t get away quick enough, she tried to pull the mare up, but she had a lot of trouble doing so. She finally pulled the mare up, but right before the finish, she faltered again, this time Alassiel could not pull her up, Bellethiel went all the way down just after the finish.
Bellethiel rolled on top of Alassiel, and after that, all she remembered was the track elf doctor and her mother rushing to her. She remembered her mother’s words; “Alassiel, Alassiel dear, can you hear me? It’s Mommy.” Mommy, Alassiel thought, I haven’t called her that in ages. “You’ll be alright dear, just hold on, you will be alright.” Alassiel’s mother said. Alassiel remembered saying something about winning the race.
Alassiel woke up in her bed, feeling very sore. Her mother rushed to her side, “Alassiel! I’m so glad you’re alright!! Honey, I’m so sorry!! But you aren’t going to be racing for a long time.” Alassiel suddenly thought, not racing? “Honey your racing career now hangs in the balance.” Will there be any more of Racing Alassiel?
