Colorado Mustangs Hockey
The Colorado Mustangs have been playing in the Hyland Hills Mens League since 1992. Hyland Hills Hockey Assoc. is locatated in Westminster, Colorado. Many of the original members of the team played their youth hockey at Hyland Hills or at the close by suburb of Arvada. The original team actually was put together for an invitational tournament put on by the league. Teams from all over the region came to play. We threw guys from many different teams on the roster just to have some fun. We ended up going to the championship game and losing to a team that was comprised all of players we had all played against throughout our youth from the south side of town. Many of the guys decided to stay with the team for the next season and the rivalry between the Mustangs and Bisons began.
The team name of Mustangs came to be simply because it was the first thing I could think of when the tournament director told me we had to have a name. I didn't want something the had already been over used, so I just said "how about the Mustangs" and the rest is history. Once we became a regular team and decided it might be fun to go to an out of state tournament we became the Colorado Mustangs.
We wear red white and blue jerseys only because I am very patriotic and am proud to wear the colors of our nation.
The number one priority of the Mustangs is to have good chemistry on and off the ice. I believe all the talent in the world can never beat a team that understands each other and works together as a unit to acheive the goal at hand. We have played many teams over the years that we were much more talented than but they had skated together for years and stayed within their system and would beat us. The team was molded to have good friendships within the hockey setting but also away from it. We have been very successful over the years both in the leagues and especially within tournament play. Although we contend every year, I take much more satisfaction knowing that I skate with a bunch of guys I can trust and I honestly care about. Isn't that what it is truly all about, having a good time and having the people you care about around you doing what you love. In my opinion hockey is the greatest sport in the world and the friends I have gained from it have been life long friendships that I will cherish forever. I plan to play as long as God will let me. I'm over 40 now and I'm starting the newest version of the Mustangs in our over 40 league. It's going to be a blast!! See everyone out on the ice.
