"Some books are meant for teaching, some for preaching and yet a large number of books entertain. Humanity has, since time immemorial, been living by different processes of learning. But today, humanity has reached a stage where there are numerous means of living and learning, thanks to the scientific and technological development man has made.
We are today passing through a historical transitional period, marking conflict between human activities and environmental constraints. The world is finite, but it will have to provide food and energy to meet the needs of the world population which will double in the third millennium. The natural resources of Planet Earth have already depleted but we have to sustain a world economy that may be five to ten times larger than the present one. Human society has reached a stage of crossroads. Abundance co-exists with deprivation; waste overshadows want and our very existence may be in danger owing to mismanagement and over exploitation of the environment.
Although we are today facing a grim picture of environmental deterioration, the book under review points to ways to save humanity from various impending disasters.
It is a homage to Mother Earth and to all things bright and beautiful and all creatures great and small. The author has examined human needs versus animal needs and has made out a strong case for survival of the animal kingdom as a unique habitat because all the creations of Nature on this planet need to live in complete harmony" (The reviewer is a free-lance writer)

Nature has blessed us with a remarkable aquatic plant, regarded by many as a mere water-weed often found on the surface of stagnant, polluted water. Few people, even some scientists do not realise the tremendous potential of Lemnaceae , more commonly known as "Duckweed". There are quite a number of varieties of this tiny aquatic plant with properties which promise to revolutionalise waste-water management in the years ahead, not only in cleaning up our streams, rivers and beaches but making the nutrients of polluted waters produce for us valuable protein. Already, "Duckweed" has proved its worth as an excellent substitute for soy and fish meal in poultry feeds. It has been successfully used in the production of fish feed and now has great potential for turning piggery effluent into valuable feed for the pigs that produce it.
Before the year 1989, Lemnaceae had only been used commercially to treat wastewater, but, in that year, The PRISM Group, based in Columbia, Maryland, U.S.A., pioneered the use of this aquatic plant, with great success, particularly in Bangladesh, and later, in Peru, in two outstanding pilot projects. . Duckweed-fed Carp and other fish are in very great demand also in certain east European countries.
In the Mirzapur Pilot Project of Bangladesh, PRISM Inc. developed a farming system which could sustain dry-weight yields of 20-35 metric tons per hectare, far in excess ( 6 to 10-fold) of the single-crop soy harvest.
