EW LYRICS: DOOLEY GOODMAN

Dooley Goodman, Evangeline, & the Crash of The Westbound #109

Dooley Goodman caught the 109
West bound out of Abilene
He had some business further down the line
He was an honest man who always played it clean

He was shaking off the rain as he walked down the isle
The conductor blew his whistle closed the door
As he was waving thru he window to his wife and child
The train pulled from the station with a roar...

It was later in the evening in the dining car
He'd gone in for some dinner and a drink
He saw the strangest woman sitting at the bar
When she looked at him he thought he saw her wink

He couldn't help but stare at her as he sat down
She turned her back and he looked away
He thought about the good life that he'd finally found
But just then his thoughts began to stray...

After dinner her rose and walked across the room
As he brushed by her she asked him for a light
Her lips were red and moist just like a rose in bloom
She blew the match out and he said, "Good night."

She said, "You look like you could use some company."
He said, "I guess now that you mention it I could."
She said, "Well, come on baby you just follow me."
He followed but he wondered if he should...

She said, "Come on in here now and close the door.
I've been looking for someone like you.
I've known every sinner under heaven's floor
But tonight none of them is gonna do...

Look out my window and read the sign
Can you see our reflection in the rain?
Your future is tangled up ahead with mine
You're never gonna be the same..."

He was thinking of his young wife back in Abilene
He was thinking how he might escape
He turned away from Evangeline
He said, "I think I'd better go its getting late..."

She touched his shoulder, he turned around
She said, "You know when I take aim I rarely miss.
Nobody has to know so tell me what's the harm?
Before you leave, how 'bout a kiss...?"

The train was rolling thru a mountain pass
The rain was turning into sleet
The engineer was pouring whiskey in his water glass
The conductor was dozing in his seat

Lightning struck a tree crashed down across the rail
Somebody yelled, "You'd better pull the brake!"
The engineer was drunk his face was turning pale
The conductor stood up suddenly awake...

It made the morning papers it was front page news
The crash of the west bound 109
It seemed they jumped the tracks just out of Santa Cruz
It was believed that no one had survived

They said among the bodies strewn about like stars
A young business man who'd come from Abilene
Was found in the wreckage of the private cars
In the arms of Evangeline...
