Las matachines de Alcalde

Las Matachines de Alcalde New Mexico Rainbow Dancers.

In the eighth century, The Moors introduced a dance called Los Matachines to the Spaniards. It was a dance the Moors did for entertainment. The dance done today in Northern New Mexico is high history now! It is seen as a reflection of the Holy Spirit. Our family has been involved in Los Matachines De Alcalde for many generations. Back in these days it was only males who performed this dance.

During May of 2004 Elaine Garcia organized the first female Matachines group in Alcalde. She made all the costumes for all the female group and many of the male groups too. She named Las Matachines group from Alcalde, "Rainbow Dancers." They have performed in many places for many people. It is a performance that keeps our culture together for many generations. Our family generations not only have been involved in Los Matachines but have also been involved in the music of the matachines and different types of other music. This site has a gallery of the dancers and musicians and family members that participate with the group.
