Edgar Cayce and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disorder
By Genevieve M. Haller, D.C.
Part 2
Corrective Exercises
January 1976. Therapeutic exercises to improve muscle tone and body mechanics, given by a teacher from the Nicholas School of Exercises, brought some response to the gastrocnemius muscles and improved the foot eversion. The patient responded by being able to stand and to walk with better balance. Foot levelers (arch supports) were measured for her in October 1975 and these assisted her at first.
Cleansing
This patient needed only a few colonics. She did, however, faithfully take castor oil packs over the abdomen four times a week. She was asked to drink more liquids, including watermelon and watermelon seed tea, to help cleanse the kidneys. Mutton tallow, spirits of camphor and spirits of turpentine (equal amounts) were rubbed over the kidney area, with ultrasound applied, and then a moist heat pack. This was prior to her chiropractic adjustments.
Massage
Since paralysis cases cannot exercise normally, massage is a form of passive exercise vital to the patient with this condition. Fortunately, the patient's husband cooperated by massaging the spine, back, and limbs four times a week with many of the oils recommended in the readings. The spinal oil rub--which is done from the base of the spine, with one thumb moving in clockwise circles on the right side of the body, and the other thumb in counterclockwise circles on the left side of the body--actually stimulates the atrophied conditions in the ganglia and centers and helps revivify those portions of the autonomic nervous system. After the use of the wet cell appliance, this combination of oils was suggested:Each day, following the use of the appliance, we would massage the back, the hips, the limbs, with a combination of oils prepared in this manner: to 4 ounces of peanut oil add, in the order named: pure grain alcohol--1 ounce, [and]
oil of sassafras root--1/2 ounce...[2937-1]
In another reading the following recommendations were suggested:...each week...one massage with Balsam of Sulphur in the lumbar and sacral regions--rubbing thoroughly along the limbs to the knees and ankles, following the course of the muscles rather than the nerves. We will find that more or the greater strength will be gained by the body through this mode of application...Balsam of Sulphur--not too dry--but massaged thoroughly into the lumbar and sacral regions, and along the muscular portions of the limbs, to the feet, ankles and on to the upper portion of the body, see? that is, to the hips. [53-3]
Electrotherapy
Whenever there was deterioration in the nerve forces, the readings usually recommended vibratorially administering gold to the body. This was accomplished through a low electrical force with the wet cell appliance. When using the gold solution, the attachments would be made as follows: the small copper plate would he applied at the 9th dorsal vertebra, and the large nickel plate (through which the gold solution passes vibratorially to the body) would be applied also over the umbilical and lacteal duct center--the same as for the camphor. [2937-1]
The wet cell appliance with 1% gold chloride solution was used with a copper plate attachment to both D-9 and L-4 for 3-1/2 months (Oct. 8 to Dec. 15, 1975), then resumed in February through May, and again in July 1976. These treatments are being given for 30 minutes, four times per week. Patient is now adding camphor.
The sinusoidal current was recommended in some cases, so the patient received this therapy on her back and legs; she also received the electric transcutaneous stimulator and the violet ray.
Karmic causes of paralysis were also touched upon in the readings, as indicated in the case of a 26-year-old woman:We find that if there is the determination in self for that desire to be rid of the disturbance and to be well again, there may be...near to normal use not only of the lower limbs and the back but of the body, the mind, and the entire person.
These, to be sure, are the results of karmic as well as physical conditions as may be indicated by the physical corrections or applications...[3694-1]
Thus the attitude of the patient was most important.
AttitudeBegin with self. Begin with the thought of what the body would do with itself if the improvements were such as for the body even to be able to walk with crutches. What would you do with it? Would it be to the glory of self, to the glory of a person, or to the glory of the Creative Forces in self? [3498-1]
Then, we would change the general attitude. Don't feel sorry for self, but begin rather to see how much better conditions are for the body than for many another. Though the body itself may not be able to move as much or as easily as it desires, and though the ability of locomotion is almost entirely gone except the general shuffle--or with the aid of others to support the body--think how much better this is than no limbs at all, or those that are constantly in pain! And the body will find that it has much to be thankful for.
If there is the change in the attitude, and then the application of the low wet cell appliance carrying to the body the vibrations of gold and camphor, with the regular massages, we may gain better control and gradually be able to control the lower limbs. [3642-1]
Q-2. Approximately how long will it take to get results?
A-2. If it requires time--as indicated, be consistent, be persistent. These are not questions so much as to whether results are to come tomorrow or next month or next year, but it is a case of the necessity of body, mind and purpose being one. As this is accomplished we will find that the body will grow in grace, in knowledge, in understanding. It is by the grace of the divine that healing may come. [3694-1]
PROGRESS REPORT
The patient responded quickly to the nutritional help given. The greatest improvement she experienced was in walking without a cane. She now moves much more quickly and tires less on her feet. Previously she could walk only half a block, and now she shops all day if necessary. She has sensory and motor nerve improvement in both feet and legs; the gastrocnemius muscle response is just beginning now, when she leans forward against a wall to brace herself and tighten the achilles tendon. On June 25, 1976 her left calf measured 13 inches and right calf 12-3/4 inches. This is almost a one inch increase in both calves within one year. Also, her physical stamina is such that she held a part-time job in a bookstore (since January 1976)--six months after the beginning of her treatments.
Additional therapy used--but not necessarily found in the Cayce readings--included nutritional supplements to treat hypoglycemia, acupuncture and ultrasound (with oils, as recommended in readings), and foot stabilizers.
FINAL COMMENTS
The Edgar Cayce readings offer a new dimension in thinking, which is not as yet accepted by orthodox medicine; therefore, case histories and research are needed to validate the work. Following the readings brought no harm to this patient, and, from the majority of the physical readings, the patient received good results if the suggestions were followed faithfully.
