Yesterday I had a cool meeting with a guy who works in the forest products extraction office. He printed me out some of the laws regarding non-timber products, which includes the "jagube" vine Banisteriopsis caapi (the leaves are not so much concern because they grow quickly, whereas the vines take several years to mature and
are therefore much more subject to endangerment). He is a Daimista! Also a very nice guy, probably in his early 30s. We got on quite well, and I am hopeful that we will be able to collaborate productively in the future.
Today I rode a bus out toward Colnia 5000. The line ends 3km short, but right near there is the house of one of the principal figures in that church (which, as it turns out, no longer has any administrative connection with CEFLURIS/Mapi -- CEFLURIS, by the way, stands for Centro Eclectico da Fluente Luz Universal Raimundo Irineu Serra, or
the Raimundo Irineu Serra Eclectic Center of the Universal Flowing Light). Also right by the bus stop happened to be the first Rio Branco center of the Unio do Vegetal, and I managed to get a contact number from a couple of fellows there. I will be fairly satisfied if I can follow that up with success, along with a contact in the Barquinha church given to me by Jlio, the fellow at the forestry office.
Also, after going out to Mestre Irineu's old neighborhood, Alto Santo, I am in a position to return there by day to photograph the 3 or 4 churches there, as well as to visit his tomb. Jlio also gave me the e-mail address of a state or federal prosecutor who should know more about the legal aspects of the government relation with the ayahuasca churches.
I found out from the fellow whose house I visited today that there will be an hinrio sung at 5000 tomorrow night, in honor of Padrinho Wilson Carneiro, who died about 4 or 5 years ago and, I believe, became head of the Colnia 5000 church when Padrinho Sebastio left for the forest.
