Dynasty Warriors

"Ma Chao The Splendid"

Ma Chao, one of the Five Tiger Generals, was a powerful, brave warrior often compared to Lu Bu. Despite his youth, he who hunted down Cao Cao in revenge for his father's murder but was eventually overcome due to Han Sui's duplicity. Later, he fought against Zhang Fei, holding his own in battle for two days until Zhuge Liang recruited him.

"Little Dragon" Zhao Yun

Zhao Yun of Changsan was one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu. He started out serving under Yuan Shao and then Gongsun Zan, but left them both because they were not honorable. Meeting Liu Bei, he was captivated by the general's great virtue, and they became fast friends. His most incredible deed was saving Liu Bei's son Liu Shan at the battle of Chang Ban, braving hordes of Wei troops alone to bring the child to safety. He outlived the other Tiger Generals, dying of old age at about 70.

Above all else, Zhao Yun was an honorable man. Even after the rest of the Five Tiger Generals were gone, Zhao Yun's experience and strength helped Shu stay together. When Zhao Yun passed away, Zhuge Liang lamented "My friend is gone. The country has lost its great beam, and I my right arm!"

"Wei Yan The Horrible"

Wei Yan from Yiyang, "eight-span height, with a face dark brown as a ripe date", was unofficially the sixth of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu. He first served Liu Baio and afterwards Han Xuan, but ended up killing the latter for ignoring him. He served Shu for many years before rebelling, and was killed by Ma Dai.

Wei Yan was not at all liked by Zhuge Liang, who perhaps could see that Wei Yan's arrogance and ambition would someday lead to him to betray Shu. In fact, during a ceremony to prolong Zhuge Liang's life Wei Yan accidentally knocked over a certain lamp, ruining the ceremony and effectively dooming Zhuge Liang to his fate

Zhang (The Pheonix) He

Zhang He of Hejian was originally an officer under Yuan Shao, but he defected to Cao Cao's side before the battle of Guan Du. Later in his career he aided Sima Yi in capturing Jie Ting from Ma Su and battled during Wei's nothern campaigns. During an archery contest, Zhang He proved his skill with the long bow by hitting the bull's eye of a target while riding a horse in the opposite direction. Zhuge Liang described Zhang He as "a most famous leader in Wei and valorous beyond all compare".

Zhang He was killed in an arrow ambush while pursuing Wei Yan in the year 231.

"The Pirate" Gan Ning

Gan Ning was a pirate from Lingjiang, described by Lu Meng as "...something of a scholar, [he] is forceful, fond of wandering about as a fighter-errant". Gan Ning was first an officer under Huang Zu but grew discontent when Huang Zu passed him over for advancement because he was a pirate. He defected to Wu and murdered Huang Zu in revenge. One of his most memorable accomplishments was a successful nighttime raid of Cao Cao's camp with only 100 men and not a single casualty. For this Sun Quan said "Cao Cao may have his Zhang Liao, but I can match him with my friend Gan Ning". Years later Gan Ning died of an arrow wound to the head. As he lay dying under a tree in Fuchikou, hundreds of crows gathered around his body as if to protect it.
